Hi everyone! I have some chicken books to give away. I’ve had backyard chickens for a decade now and have decided to take a break. My flock has dwindled down to two happy, healthy old ladies. It’s hard to imagine not having chickens running around and who knows how long I’ll last without, but...

Can a dog and chickens safely coexist in a small backyard?

Yes! I have 2 large dogs, a cat, a pigeon and 5 hens whom all live peacefully in our small yard. A dog can be taught to leave chickens alone, whether they are raised with them or trained at an older age. Breeds known to have more of a prey drive will be more of a challenge and you may want to...

How many hens can I fit in my coop?

I did, I even had those little ceramic eggs you can buy. I let them do what they wanted in the end and only have one box now.

    panicking - Winter Storm Coming!

You don’t need to heat your chickens. Protection from wind and moisture is all you need to worry about. They will need food and water though, so you might work on a way to incorporate that. How many hens can I fit in my coop?

My girls are sleeping in their nesting boxes, I know there coop is small. What to do, one is laying already.

There’s no problem with a hen sleeping in the nesting box, she probably feels secure there. Keep it clean and let her be would be my suggestion. Chickens don’t always follow people rules and expectations.

Official BYC Poll: Crumbles, Mash, or Pellets?

Whole grain feed. We us one that is non-gmo, no corn, no soy and organic.

Will my chickens survive their first winter?

Chickens are very resilliant creatures and they will be fine as long as they are protected from the wind and moisture. I live in Colorado and my chickens have had no problem with temps as low as -9 with no heater. I use an electric bowl that plugs in to keep water from freezing in the coop. If...

Hi, I have a had a lot of different breeds and by far my most reliable egg layer is a 7.5 year old americauna (blue-green). She is friendly and talks as much as the other girls. I also have a cuckoo maran (brown) who is very reliable. I've found that leghorns( white) are also very reliable. My...
