Greetings, fellow Chicken Lovers! I'm Holly Alarcon, an artist recently moved to No. Austin TX from Los Angeles CA, and thrilled to be here! I used to have a flock of 5 hens in Calif., but now I'm starting over with two 2-month old chickens, a barred rock & an araucana; and 4 chicks: 1 each...

    Got Turkey? Pic Added

My daughter (22) sneaked a Bourbon Red poult into my box of 2 Buff Orpingtons several days ago when I was at Georgetown Farm Supply. She has always wanted a turkey, but I didn't take her commitmnet seriously. I must confess that little bird is quite beautiful and endearing! She/He makes the...

    Texas

I live in N. Austin and am thrilled to be a new member here! Am originally from Seattle, and Austin has that sort of feel to me--friendly, casual, and creative. Have at the moment 1 Easter Egger and 1 Barred Rock, and am picking up 2 Dominques and maybe 2 Buff Orpingtons this Tuesday. Also...

How did you come up with your screen name?

I was obsessing about when my 2 Dominique chicks would be available, and impulsively chose SleekDominique. Now, I wish I'd selected something more general. Someone could sue me for false advertising, because there is nothing sleek about me! Holly

    Texas Chickenstock

Please count me in, Carla! I'm so looking forward to meeting everyone and seeing chickens too. I would love to bring something chocolate, if that would be appropriate. If not, a fruit salad. Or both! Cheers, Holly

WANTED: Dominique, (Domineckers) Barred Rocks, in TEXARKANA< TEXAS

This is certainly Geographically Undesirable, but I just got Barred Rocks and am expecting a shipment this Tuesday of Dominiques from Georgetown Farm Supply. I live in N. Austin, a nice 5 1/2 hour drive from y'all! Georgetown is a measly 5 hours away from Texarkana. Cheers, Holly

    Splitting orders/resources in DFW area

I'm not sure about SLW's, but Georgetown Farm Supply is where I bought my Araucana pullet 3 weeks ago. (I live in N. Austin.) They're very good at ordering what you want; I said I was hoping for Dominiques, and Miz Amy immediately wrote up a standard order for them, assuring me she'd just put...

Convert metal storage shed to coop?

Thank you all (ooops, I'm in North Austin,* Texas now, I meant y'all) for the terrific advice and pictures. What a relief to have a solution close at hand. Now to read up on the details. This forum is the BEST! One more question: this is one of those inexpensive Arrow steel sheds and has no...

Convert metal storage shed to coop?

I'm feeling rather crestfallen after looking at all these wonderful, exciting chicken coop designs and photos. My 2 chicks (soon to be as many as 6) are still young, but I know how fast they grow into needing real housing instead of my converted chinchilla cage! I am a single mom and totally...

    feedstore chicks?

Some years ago I bought 5 different chicks from 2 separate feed stores and they all turned out magnificent: healthy and gorgeous, superb layers. My friend bought hers from the same store and some turned out well, others a bit weedy. I just bought an Araucana and a Barred Rock from a feed store...

What are everyone's chickens names and why?

My best names were "Lola Falana the Araucana" (nicknamed Lola, of course) and a rather aggressive Rhode Island Red named "Jezebel the Hen from Hell" (aka Jezzy). My daughter named our Barred Rock "Macabre" because as a chick, it looked Goth. ;^P Holly

Which breeds of Chickens are friendliest and which are Not?

I used to have a flock of 5 hens in Los Angeles. My barred rock was the sweetest. The Rhode Island Red had a peppery temper. Holly
