Last fall I planted honeysuckle, butterfly bushes, and a clematis vine around the outside of the chicken pen thinking the honeysuckle and clematis would provide shade when they start growing over the top. Someone just told me that theyre poisonous? :/ Really?? I've been reading a lot of...
Upping their protein to see if that helps. Cat food? Sounds easy enough. I could probably scramble and feed back some of the older eggs that I've stock piled, too. Hopefully their feathers grow back fairly soon. And hopefully the picking and eating feathers hasn't become a habit.
Oh my gosh. I have the prettiest flock of hens...or had! They're 10 months old, could they be molting already? But they're also picking each other's feathers and eating them. My 2 little red leghorns are nearly bald! The EEs, sussexes, and minorcas are missing a lot of feathers also. My...
I found a hen dead this morning with a chewed up neck, no other marks on it. I'm thinking it's a weasel or a mink? I've trapped coons, possums, and skunks before, but no a weasel.
How have you successfully trapped one? Someone told me a pvc pipe with a rat trap inside? Will my havahart...
Finally!! I started getting eggs this week. 2 one day, 7 the next, 3 today. Mine hatched May 29...so 5 1/2 mo. old. First hens laying were my black minorcas, naked necks, and red leghorns. Still waiting for my easter eggers, sussex, and wyandottes  Very first eggs came from...
Yes, I can get a picture of them tomorrow. They've actually started laying in just the last couple days (they hatched May 29). They've turned out to be pretty little hens. They're a pretty rusty red with white earlobes, and the size of a white or brown leghorn. And don't eat nearly as much...
I agree! I have always liked naked necks. They've always been hardy in the winter and were good layers. Indiana winters are cold and can be snowy, seems odd a NN is cold hardy but they are. I have 4 NN pullets now and 1 huge young rooster...actually, my rooster crowed for the first time this...
My chickens are now 17 weeks old and I'm really really ready for some eggs!!
I have pourrred the feed into them, fed them treats (tomatoes, watermellons, sweet peppers, carrot tops) from the garden... It is time. !!! :th
I have:
Ameracaunas
Black Minorcas
GL Wyandottes
Red leghorns
Naked...
Am I using this right? I've been mixing a little in their feed and grit, and sprinkling in the coop, and run. Is this overkill? I'm using a little half pint freezer container about half full, and adding this to the entire 50# bag of feed. I'm just guessing..and what I've read is vague...
Maybe search what laying hens cost? There are a few places that sell them. Depends on where you live, do they want them just till they're feathered out or till they're mature and laying? Right now I have 23 that hatched the end of May. I'm going through a 50# bag of feed about every 10 days...
