We had a waterer with nipples several years ago, but the nipples always seemed to leak, even after we replaced the nipples. Do those of you who use this type have a problem with leaking? After several years of this, we switched to a different type.
Greetings! We’ve been keeping chickens since 2013. Once our flock began to grow, we purchased a six gallon plastic waterer for our eleven girls for the summer. Whenever I go to add water, I have to take the thing apart and clean the red mold out of it. Is there anything that can be done to...
Just went out to the coop this afternoon, and, boy! I came in with 26 eggs, and I’m pretty sure at least a couple of our Brahma pullets are laying already. They are only 3 months old. Anyhow, the pretty egg holder in the kitchen sure got filled up!
My daughter-in-law has a really nice wire two level thingy to display the eggs. We would put the green, blue and our one white egg on the top, and our shades of brown on the bottom. If an egg was slightly soiled, we would use a rough dry sponge to remove the visible soil. If the eggs were really...
We live in New Jersey and have been buying our chicks at our local Agway store. Either they are excellent at sexing (wherever they get them from) or we are just EXTREMELY LUCKY, but since 2013, we have purchased a total of 20 chicks (only 2 were sex-links) we have ever only gotten ONE rooster...
UPDATE ~~ I ended up going back to the coop soon after reading the replies. At that time, 3 of the chicks were back in the coop, but there was one nervous chick still out in the run without her sibs or her mama. I decided to catch her and put her onto the loft from the run, and she flew down to...
TheGirlOverThere: That's basically what I was planning to do when it gets closer to dusk. The big girls will be back in the coop for the night, and the little ones will either figure it out, or I'll catch them and put them in the coop myself!
LOL. They didn't have food or water out in the run, but I brought them out a one gallon waterer, and they just about drained it, with the help of some of our grown hens. Brought them out some more water. :jumpy I will go out directly and give them some food out there, too. Thanks for the tip!
Posting pics will help you get the layout of our coop and run (below). Somehow they get out there (up the ramp to the loft and down a long ramp into the run). But 3 of 4 are chirping madly while mamma Charlie keeps pacing and going from run into coop and back again. One chick, who was in the run...
So glad all is well. Our Charlie and her four chicks are doing well, and our eleven other hens are curious but haven’t bothered the little family. This is surely the most trouble free way of adding to your flock :love .
