So cute! Our Lizzie is the sweetest of our 5 girls. We have an Australorp, 3 Dominiques, and Lizzie the nn Australorpe. So they are all rather nice birds, but there is something special about her. She is also the most curious and has been ever since a wee chick. The Doms can be quite vocal...

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

We live in Georgia and our yard is nothing but good ole Georgia red clay! From what I understand, having some sand mixed in would be an improvement! But I plan for the gals to stay put right where they are

    Run Question (poo question)

Quote: I was talking to a friend today about sand. I am planning on putting it in our 10x7.5 run. We have 5 sweet chickies as of Monday. My friend was saying that she wondered if the sand would last and was telling me about her hens constantly digging holes. Most everything I have read on...

How to euthanize a pet chicken?

Just to be clear, I would not endorse anything inhumane. I have never tortured even bugs and certainly wouldn't want to torture a chicken. I just read about this method recently and the post made it seem easy and simple. I didn't realize it wasn't as instant as the author implied. So please...

How to euthanize a pet chicken?

ps I hope you can do surgery, but if it comes to euthanizing, I read a post about putting them in something airtight and adding baking soda and vinegar to a cup within. I don't know more personally about it, but you may want to look into it.

How to euthanize a pet chicken?

I read that you can use the Google bar on the top right of the page. Not exactly search, but it worked well for me earlier.

Boernechickens - I am glad to hear it! I am so grateful for these plans. I would love to see your coop. I will be posting pics at some point, too. This is the first real thing we've built, and I am sure to be proud of it!

    Flock size for small backyard

no, not incorrect at all. That is the general rule. I just wanted to hear from those with small flocks the pros/cons of going beyond that vs keeping to that...real life experience. My main goal is to ensure that we have a flock size that is right for us. btw thanks Elmo for reminding me...

    Flock size for small backyard

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Intheswamp, thanks for pointing out my Barbie math (remember girls, math is tough!). What I mean is I have 20x20, 10x10, etc. The areas are like squares of my yard, so I got my wires crossed. We have framed the coop/run. It is going to be 75sqft (10x7.5)...

ACK Barred Rock chicks mixed w/ Dominique...

Thank you! After feeling around rubbing the tops of their heads with no luck, I took a look at one head on! Here I was rubbing and rubbing these little chicks not getting it, but then, ah ha!! Right at the top of the beak there were the ridges. Two had them, six didn't. The numbers added...
