    Everyone Post Your Pigeon Pics!!!!!

This is Pedro - he needed a home and our first rescued dove needed some company. Pedro is a proper character, he even hangs around with our ducks (caught him in the pond with them on his second day with us!) This is our first called Forest. He had head trauma and had been licked bald in...

What To Use For A Duck Pond And How To Keep It Clean??????

You need biological filtration to break down the harmful into beneficial. Then you need lots of plants to stop green water. Obviously in winter the bio filters stop working but the bacterial load is low at this time of year anyway. Beyond that you will probably have to do fairly regular clean...

    Duck poop compost?

Every couple of months I get 2 or 3 buckets of duck poo out of the pond filters and from the pond bottom. Some gets added to the waste bedding for composting and some gets left for use as fertiliser. It's serious stuff!!

Baby Ducks - to take from the mother or not to take....that is the question.

It's easier and usually better to leave them with the mother. That said even a protective duck can lose track of its ducklings - if there are predators around and you don't want to lose any young then you have 2 options. Put them all somewhere secure or take the young and raise them. We raised...

    Pictures Of Your Little Ducklings!!

This year we have 2 new ducklings. We were adamant that we would have no more but I didn't have the heart to break up all the nests! Worth it though -

How does one keep a duck pond clean???

So it's now running with a 4 inch gravity feed system with extra mechanical filtration before the pump. Stays clean for upto 12 weeks at a time now! Though I am still having issues with green water; but it now takes about a week to start going green instead of 2 days - that's due to adding...

    Rodents in the duckpen!

We have a large roaming rat population (canals and town centre nearby), and we regularly have families of them move in to our yard - you get rid of one lot and at best it'll be clear for 3 or 4 months before more move in. The more food you leave lying around the bigger the rat problem. I've...

What are some fun, basic duck facts? (For presentation)

Ducks need company - never keep a duck alone. Something everyone should be told and you can add a cute photo like

    uk predator...

Harris hawks aren't native to the UK - it would be a falconry bird that had escaped into the wild. I would definitely concur that regardless of whether the culprit from this particular attack was caught, you need to secure your birds from the main UK predators. We have a large number of...

    cement duck pond

Cement ponds usually have a layer of pond liner sandwiched between two layers of cement. Koi filtration will also work; you will just be cleaning filters more regularly and the same with water changes. Best method is a gravity fed bottom drain. I'm currently having to clean my filters every...

    Yeasty people... Which one?

Every now and then I'll give a little sprinkle but I don't think they really need it - there should be enough in the pellet food for adults but I don't use the yeast for me so I have to get rid of it somehow! It was too expensive to waste and I have no more room for more ducks so I won't be...

    Yeasty people... Which one?

Yep nutritional yeast is virtually the same as brewers yeast - I struggle to get brewers in the UK and found the nutritional stuff in a health shop. It's more expensive but worth it so you don't have to crush up vitamin tablets and worry about overdose.

    Duck grooming chicken

Only my female ducks preen the chickens, it's sweet to watch :) I would be very worried if my drake started doing it as he doesn't even do it to the female ducks! To be fair though I doubt he would do anything as my drake only gets a jump when my girls offer themselves. He's lucky I have 2 sex...
