We love our Spitzhauben girl who is now going on to 9 years old. She has become the farm mascot and family pet and has earned her spot here as long as nature allows. She is a very friendly girl who will allow you to walk over and pick her up where ever she is. Loves to free range but tolerates...
Our neighbor had a polish rooster and whenever anyone would step into the entry way of the coop he would fly and hit the coop doorr. Nasty fellow, he was. However our Polish hen was one of the sweetest little personalities that you could ask for.
Could well have some Polish in them. We have a half Polish with a hairdo about like that. The five toes may suggest some Salmon Faverolli in the background. (or silkie LOL)
I am sorry for your loss. It sounds like you are taking very good care of your birds. It is not your fault, I am sure but I know the loss is difficult just the same.
Thanks for the suggestions and the great article. I have listened to the birds and cannot hear any gurgling sounds or other respiratory sounds but sometimes they do seem to be breathing through an open mouth. So I will definitely treat for respiratory illness. I have a couple different kinds of...
Yes, fluffed up and not moving around. I have checked around face, vent and under wings and see no signs of external parasities. The combs are nice and red.
I will go right now and check for lice/mites. However, they have acted lethargic and were humped up and still keep their eyes shut a lot. Would this be symptomatic of mites/lice or not?
I see this occassionally as well. One evening I noticed a hen looking uncomfortable and picked her up to examine her. Just as I picked her up, a shellless egg dropped out. I've seen the occassional soft shelled egg dropped from the roost at night. I wonder if they have more difficult laying the...
We have some sick Wyandottes and I am puzzled as to what is wrong. Thought I'd check with the knowledgeable folks here to see if you may have any ideas. Several days ago, we had some chickens humped up and acting somewhat lethargic. This continue for 2-3 days (depending on the chicken). Now...
This "list of ten" is good advise. Thanks for taking the time to write up and post it. Good info for we "old timers" at chicken keeping and for newbies.
Do you have weasels in your area? Weasels will suck the blood from them and they die. You might see a bloody spot on ther neck but they won't be tore up like other animals.
I find the water hose works good for our cats.and the neighbours cats. Cats hate water and I've caught some cats chasing my chickens. I turned the water on them . A good squirt of water sends them flying. At first they kept coming back but after several squirts with the water hose I haven't had...
I like to keep mine shut in until i'm sure they are done laying for the day. Once they get in a habit of laying inside they will return to the pen to lay even if they run loose outside. It's a good idea to train them right at first , if not you may find eggs all over the barnyard. Then it's...
