One piece of advice for a newbie?

Looks like a great place for them to hang out. You'll probably get lots of advice but here is my two cents. Find a veterinarian in your area that sees chickens, just in case. Not all of them will. I look on the Chicken Chick's site for answers sometimes for questions about what their stool...

    Dislocated Wing?

OK. Thank you for your replies. I will try to photograph her and give you some more information tomorrow as she's resting now and I'm getting ready to go to bed as well.

    Dislocated Wing?

I have a pullet who seems to have a dislocated wing. She's moving slowly, didn't roost this evening and her right wing does not feel like it's in its socket. Any advice? I do have a vet but it's a holiday week and am not sure if I can get her in. Thank you.

I have two of these coops and they are great--easy to clean, move, put together. I just wish they made an even larger size for my large flock.

    Buyer Beware!!!...Chicken Coops NW

Thank you for that post. I was about to purchase a new coop and I'm so glad I saw your information or I would have bought from that company. I've had chickens for about 4 1/2 years and my flock keeps growing and I need another two or three houses. I will look somewhere else. I've gotten coops...

Comment by 'Smuch' in article 'Ten Reasons You Should Spend Ten Extra Minutes With Your Flock Every Day'

You are absolutely right. I have a lot of chickens because somehow I ended up rescuing chickens that needed homes so I can't be with each of them as often as I'd like, but I know them all by name (that I gave them, of course) and I often say I could write a soap opera about what they do using...

Comment by 'Smuch' in article 'Commingling Chickens With Other Farm Animals'

When I have my chickens out with me with the equines the donkey is more likely to put his head down and check out the chickens which sometimes scares them. I have a gelding who will try to kiss the chickens if I am holding them. He breathes on them and sometimes tries to lick them. Some are...

Comment by 'Smuch' in article 'Commingling Chickens With Other Farm Animals'

Thank you. I have chickens, horses, a donkey, goats and cats and pretty much have seen the behavior you have outlined. Our dog, who recently died, was not good with chicks and killed some so we kept all the chickens away from him. My chickens don't go out with the equines and goats too much...

    Broody hen off nest

Thank you, redsix; she's been on the nest a lot and in fact I've only seen her off twice but she seemed to get lost both times. She also acts like she thinks she's pretty mean and both times I put her back on she settled right in again. I think she really wants to be a mother hen. I'll really...

    Broody hen off nest

Help, please. I have a first-time broody chantecler. She has stayed on the nest pretty much all the time for 16 days and is eating well. I moved her into an area in our shop and put her in a dog kennel with the doors closed but not locked so she could get out if she needed to. I have not...

My chantecler just started setting last week and I put several other eggs under her. She is a great brooder--fluffs up and hisses at me, eats when I'm not looking and is taking her fluids. Thanks for your info. I hope my Olivia Hayden Mrs. BlueLegs is as good a mom as your girl.

Comment by 'Smuch' in article 'Spring Greens for Your Flock (And You!)'

What a great article. I have a lot of those "weeds" and have been trying to pull them up with not much success because they are so hardy. Now I know I don't have to get rid of them. So should I just pull the plants and put them out where the chickens are or should I let them out to free range...
