    Mice and hen breeds

This afternoon I saw a small hole near my coop. I put the hose in it and flushed out 2 very sleek mice. I bapped them with my rake. They didn't run through the chicken run so I don't know what my girl's would have done

    Buzzard problems

Europe doesn't have anything like our New World vultures, the Turkey and Black Vultures. Southern Europe has vultures, but they're like those things you see on Animal Planet scavenging dead Zebras in Africa. Buzzards in Europe are Buteos. Buteos are a worldwide family of hawks, that includes the...

    Garter Snake infestation

Garter snakes back east are usually around 2 to 2&1/2 feet long. One subspecies, the Giant Garter Snake, lives in the western Sierra foothills. I've seen them, I'd believe 5 foot maybe, but 3 to 4 feet would be more common. Snake venom, and the equipment to deliver it, evolved from saliva and...

Are Dogs and Chickens OK together?

I think they're a mouthy breed. Pompy loves to play ball and rope tug. I think they have some hunting genes, he will point a cat and chase it. They're a poofy looking dog but the speed and agility they have is extraordinary. I'd say they're more like a lab though, but of course one dog might be...

    Mean hen

First time chicken keeper. I have four Production Reds and couldn't be happier for the most part. They don't fight, we get a lot of eggs, and one of them is fairly friendly. Problem is the boss hen. I like to sit in the yard reading, and she's taken to coming up and giving me a peck. If I shoo...

    Do Chickens eat bees?

I just put out 2 bee hives in the yard. I let my hens range a few days a week and eventually they are going to find the hives and could probably just stand at the entrance eating their fill. They do like their bugs too, if they find a beetle or caterpillar it's game on.

Are Dogs and Chickens OK together?

My Portuguese Water Dog grew up with pullets ranging on the lawn. When I throw out scratch, the dog likes to eat it and the hens are head to head with him, pecking as fast as they can to get their share. It's really funny, especially with mealworms, because they all love them. My dog is...

    Can anyone ID this snake?

    Can anyone ID this snake?

Pine snake or corn snake are good possibilities, might be a milk snake too. They all sorta broadly imitate a rattlesnake and are harmless. They are certainly a danger to chicks, but especially to rodents. They would also eat eggs but only at a pretty substantial size.

    Runt?

Can't really say she ever looked sick, feathers always ok and she always ate. She looks about the same as the other Reds did a week or two ago, so maybe that's it. Would that explain the sitting instead of standing? I just put the run out last week so maybe more space will help. I try and spread...

    Hello everyone.

This site is awesome, I spent hours reading before I got my girls. I have 3 Reds and a BO, 12 weeks old. I have a coop from Tractor Supply but I also made a 72sq-ft run from chicken wire and PVC. It's strong because we have dogs, neighborhood cats and possums, and the possibility of raccoons...

    Runt?

First, thanks to everyone for providing such an excellent place to come for information. So, I have 12 week old pullets, 3 Reds and a Buff Orp, and this is my first flock. One of the Reds has always been distinctly smaller than the rest of my girls. She keeps to herself a lot. I notice she...
