Last several days temps have been a low of mid 50s and a high during the days of low 70s or 60. (It's been perfect for animals and way too cloudy/damp for the garden) I did take the lamp off of them a week ago. They have shade to get under even in this mild weather.

This morning I had 4 healthy ISA Browns and 4 healthy Pro Reds. All hatchery chicks, the reds a few weeks behind the browns in age. (I've had them about a month.)
Two died today. The internet it full of "sudden death" stories. But what has me puzzled is that one was a member of the older browns...
If used motor oil is a no-no then the gear oil would likely be as well. It is essentially heavy/thick motor-oil (for us laymen.) It wouldn't be contaminated with the byproducts of combustion, but would be exposed to metal wearing on metal.
Might ask at hardware stores for any of the sealers...
Howard E. You're correct that the idea is to rotate the ground the chickens are on. Amd being able to move them arround my garden plot in the late fall and early spring is one of the attractions. No mud holes though, let them eat it down, then move before it's bare. Depending on population...
