Thanks everyone for the advice! My garage has no windows (or space, If I’m honest) so putting her there isn’t the best option. I have been putting her on the roosting bars at night, but she just goes straight back to the box.
I’ll try crating her during the day and see if that works. If she...
I’ve got a 9 month old pullet (started laying at the end of September) who has gone broody. Usually I will let one or two that go broody raise a few chicks for me each year, but it’s too early to consider that right now, especially with an inexperienced gal like this one. I have a wire dog crate...
This is a very informative thread and I am curious to see the progression as this gal (hopefully) heals.
For what it’s worth, I have a suggestion for your other chickens that you mentioned also have bumblefoot. A local chicken keeper swears by using a drawing salve called Prid. She claims that...
I have a Brahma hen who I noticed was acting off from her usual self today. She was sitting around and not her usual busy foraging self. I inspected her feet and found a classic-looking bumble on one foot. I know how to treat that one - soak, remove, iodine, wrap.
The sole of her other foot...
Exactly. I know that for some people, the production breeds are the way to go, and there are a lot of legitimate reasons for why. I can respect those reasons and don’t think they’re bad people for managing their chickens the way they do. For me however, I have space for a larger flock (currently...
Final update: I had to put down my other ISA Brown tonight. She was 3 years, 8 months. Her last egg was 5 days ago, today I found her hiding in a nesting box with foamy egg goo dripping out of her vent. She’d been laying consistently up to that point. It’s always hard to put a hen down, but I...
Sorry to be slow updating. Poop is a bit loose. She is losing control of her legs and sits with them splayed out to the side. I will be putting her down tonight.
Draining her is not something I am inclined to pursue, but thank you for sharing the information. She is a very hands-off personality and being touched is (and has always been) very stressful for her. Since it’s only a bandaid and not an actual cure, I don’t see enough of a benefit to subject...
As I mentioned in the original post, her comb is normally purple. When she is laying, the purple turns a more vibrant shade but it’s still purple. Her comb is a modified pea comb, so it doesn’t have enough vertical height to flop.
I haven’t seen any lash eggs, but I will monitor her poop.
I have an (almost) 3 year old Ameraucana/Silkie cross that has been acting off this week. She has a swollen belly and her breathing seems labored. Normally she is a very active forager but she has been very sedentary the past three days. She can walk, but only does so slowly and seems unsteady...
I lost one of my ISA’s in March - she was just shy of 3.5 years old. As best I can figure, she was laying internally and went downhill very quickly - within 2-3 days of my noticing she was doing poorly with occasional liquid dripping from her vent to my decision to put her out of her misery. She...
Is there any difference in effectiveness among these three dewormers? Is any one substantially better than the others? I’m treating for tapeworms, these all have praziquantel in them, which I have read here and elsewhere is the most effective for treating tapes...
