    Brooder Questions....

Chicks grow really fast. Best to invest in something that they can stay in until they are about 6 weeks old as you will want to move them into their coop by then. I would suggest 1 sq foot of empty space for each chicken. I have a 4X4 brooder for my 2 week old chickens. There are 16 of them.

Injured hen with laceration wants out of "infirmary"

She has calmed down and I found her happily eating and drinking. She had laid an egg and it is still warm. She seems better and more content. Thanks everyone!

Injured hen with laceration wants out of "infirmary"

I found one of my hens with a large laceration two days ago. She was moving about normally with tail feathers up while she free-ranged. She is my most skittish hens so it was difficult to catch her. I had to make sure she didn't go into the pen and it was practically dark before I could catch...

    Labored breathing

I have committed to using the treats to get them in the pen as a last ditch effort. Now I just let them go in when they are ready. They haven't complained and frankly I am not either since it saves on money. Thanks for your help and advice.

My DH doesn't give out the treats so I don't have to worry about that. I use the treats to get them back into the run while it is still light so I can count them. Today I only gave out two handfuls to get the majority of them up. The other two were placed in the run. I'll try the fresh herbs.

    Labored breathing

Thank you so much for your assistance and insight. It took me awhile to do the necropsy as I have never done that before nor have I ever butchered a chicken. I took some pictures but am having difficulty in loading them to the website via my old cell phone. I will try later using the...

    Labored breathing

She is a red sex-link. They eat Dumore Organic 16% Layer Pellets. They free-range half of the day usually from around 12pm to 6pm if not more. They get a mixture of mealworms, sunflower seeds, and cracked corn as a nightly treat before going to bed. Occasionally, I will scramble them some...

    Labored breathing

Thank you. This is the first one from my first flock to pass. She was 9 months old. I am researching how to perform a necropsy myself.

    Labored breathing

Checked on her around 2am and she was peaceful. Checked again at 4 am and unfortunately she has passed. Ugh! I am now so worried about the other hens.
