I have bare spots in my yard from the bad yard company that was hired to take care of my yard, I now have a new company, but I am trying something new this fall and in the coming spring. I found a product used for wild deer or wild turkeys to attract them. So I figure it would work for chickens...
As to why chose cracked over whole corn, cracked corn wont grow. When i fed whole corn i would sometimes find corn growing in strange places like the flower beds. Mind you it was to the wild birds and I did not have chickens then, but if the chickens miss any corn I dont want it growing in my...
I live in MN and am on the raptor migration flyway so am starting to see them come through the area. I know there is nothing harmful that i can do to them. But does anyone have any ideas on how to keep my chickens from becoming a regular stop on the route? I got cds hanging from a tree to keep...
Thank goodness I live in the city. I free range my chickens on a lot and a half. I even had a chicken wander off for two days and she found her way back. I still have to worry about coons, cats and idiots that can't close gates. Had a red tail hawk visit tonight but cant do a thing about them...
If they say he is crowing at 3am then get up at 230am and video tape both the rooster and your neighbors house. Do this for a week. No crowing and you proved your rooster is innocent, and watch the neighbors to see if they are even up. Heck i would ding dong ditch them at the time they say the...
I would be afraid of the parasite developing an immunity to it. Like infections have to antibiotics. Plus some chemicals build up in the flesh, fat or internal organs.
It has happened in other animals and with other chemicals. It's just something to think about.
If I was going to prevention...
Did anyone read the last paragraph? It said to check with a vet to make sure you get the right meds and that your bird are even sick. Why risk your flock by dosing with possibility harmful chemicals?
I would save the slugs and snails in a container with some greens your chickens like and give it all to the chickens in the morning.
Watching the chickens from the window is not stalking its being a good chicken mom, or enjoying a good comedy act, depending on what the chickens are doing.
New strange behavior in Athena! She has stopped crowing but now won't go into the coop with the other 4 chickens at night. Mealworms and fresh cooked rice two of my chickens favs won't get her in the coop. Last night i had somewhere to go and could not get her in before i left so Dad came over...
My neighborhood squirrels and chipmunks would turn that trigger feeder in to a self serve buffet. Nope I am going for the permanent stopping power of snap traps, mouse and rat where the chickens are not going to be. And non lethal scare tactics where the chickens are. I like the CD and fake owl...
Three photos of Athena the crowing hen. She is 5 months old, give or take a week or two. I was at the state fair yesterday and in the poultry barn i heard a lot of roos crowing. The noise she makes is not like an advertising roo, I think its just her way as alpha hen to keep her flock together...
This is a strange question and tale so here it goes.
On Friday last week I came home from dialysis sick as can be, my Dad helped me out by giving the flock some fresh water and let them out to free range in my fenced in yard. Dad then went home, but i fell asleep without going out to watch the...
My alpha hen is a banty and she goes after the full sized hens as she thinks they need it. Size does not matter to her and banties can think they got it all. So when you do put them together dont be surprised if a banty gets the best of the full sized.
I just moved the feeder into the coop and so far, knock on wood, no wild critter has figured out to go up the ramp and into the coop to get the food. Mind you my Dad was not happy i had stopped feeding the chickens til i showed him the feeders new location.
