White Sultans have to be my favorite breed of chicken. Very sweet - and love to be held. The only downside is their size - there is almost nothing to them weight wise.

I noticed the same thing happening with our girls. Watermelon now gets used in moderation! The poor girls now think every time I come out of the house I am bring watermelon - and they all start .
Pecking order. We noticed the same behavior with our Golden Comet baby chick when she was a week old. We had to make a 'baby chick hospital' because she would get too aggressive with some of the other chicks. Everyone made it to adulthood just fine - and she is no longer the alpha chicken!
I agree with the "let them settle in for the first day rule." Then there is no reason why they can't be handled every day. In our last batch of chicks we handled them every day - and now as adults - they have no problem being picked up and petted.

Great article! We use Aspen shavings for our new baby chicks - very minimal dust. Paper towels over the shavings for the first couple of days helps to discourage any eating of the shavings.
We have been using Countryside Organics for over a year - and we have it shipped in. We have tried a few other options, and we like Countryside the best. I notice they offer free in store pick up for some areas.
