I have 4 Cayugas, 3 boys and 1 girl. (I also have Pekins) The Cayugas are lovely in personality and in appearance. We've had them since they were 1 day old, it's so much fun watching them grow. Ours are now a little over 6 months old. I hear alot of people complain about 'mean' drakes but my...
The same two Pekins as in the video were in the pool just now doing a neck dance. I hope I explain this well enough because I didnt get a video, they were facing one another and moving their necks back and forth. One to the left, then facing, then to the right. What does this mean? Do you have...
Thanks for all the info, and your help. I guess really only time will tell with these Pekins who is who. I have only seen one other nip-like behavior and that is from the one dominate cayuga that we assumed must be male. He was nipping the everyone about 2 weeks ago and now as fully stopped. I...
Interesting, thank you for the info. I'll have to watch the two of them more closely. If I take Iris away from the group she quacks but 'her' voice has changed and she sounds a bit like chicken today. I am looking forward to seeing some drake feathers so I have a better sense of who is male...
You've seen yours act this way too? Were they a female and male couple? How old are yours now? Thanks for watching my video and your thoughts on it. Our ducks often bop their heads at us, I love that behavior too

They are only 11 weeks old and they are still going through their voices...
My ducks are 10 and a half weeks old, today two of them (Basil and Iris) starting doing this:

I am guessing that this is the beginning of one duck courting another, I've noticed the two of them hanging around together a lot in the past week. Today I was lucky enough to have...
Ducks can carry the avain flu virus but it is very rare that it affects them. That is one of the great things about ducks! Here is a excerpt: "Katharine Magor, a U of A associate professor of biology, has identified the genetic detector that allows ducks to live, unharmed, as the host of...
Thanks for the tip, it is something to try. We haven't had a situation yet where Blackberry has been alone, so I guess I'll have to try that and see. They are always together in a group of seven or broken up into two groups, one with three the other with four. When they split up too far...
Welcome to BYC! I think you have beautiful ducks. I have cayugas as well, 4 of them. They are wonderful ducks, I enjoyed your comments on behavior at 13 weeks with mating, we were wondering when we might see more activity, Our our 10 weeks old now and one of our males, Clover, is just starting...
We feed them both, whole and cut up grapes. When they were small it was only cut up grapes but then once we brought the whole grape cluster in to feed them and it dropped, they went mad for it. We learned then that they didn't care if it was cut or not. I prefer cutting them still though...
Thanks for watching everyone, the tomato chase really did make my day. lol :) The Pekins will do the same thing if we give them a piece of banana this way instead of cutting it up small. hehe
I was just doing a little online research on bill colors and came across Lutein http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutein most interestingly it talks of certain foods which have higher carotene levels kale, dandelions, turpin greens all being very high in this. It seems that ducks may show individual...
Our ducks just love tomatoes, do any of yours love them too? This much? They go crazy for it and play this fun keep away game. Anyways, here is a video. You can also check out more of my duck videos on youtube, the goldfish one is another good one. You can hear Clementine quacking, she just...
