I haven't had that much experience with those guys, the only time I ever had a problem with them was when one grabbed my Maran hen out of the yard. We are getting rid of them, but there are way too many for us to shoot.
We do have a ton of coyotes in our area, but usually they carry things off, and they take hens in the morning or night. It is quite possible though, just the time of day the chicken was killed confuses me, since most predators do not eat things in the middle of the afternoon
It could be a weasel as @Beer can suggested. They are nasty little things, and they kill just for fun too. It might be a coon, but they typically make a hug mess when they kill things. In my experiences, possums have just carried off the chickens or left small pieces. Could you have scared the...
When I came home from school a few weeks ago, I went to check on my chickens and they all looked fine. About 3 hours later, I went down again to give them some table scraps, and one of them was missing. I looked around a bit, and found it near the woods, about 100 feet from the coop. It was...
I haven't been waiting on a new puppy in a long time. My australian shepherd just turned 10 last month, and she was my most recent puppy. It must be very exciting!
I would keep the best mannered roo. He could help keep the girls safe, and roosters are a pretty sight though of course that is not the only reason to keep one.
So, I have tried bringing them treats and handling them. My polish have never been with the other birds, and are a bit easier to handle. They let me pet them, but only if I am down on eye level. They eat out of my hand. The EEs are wild. I am spending about an hour with them every day. Sometimes...
I have had chickens for nine years, and kept my flock strictly for commercial purposes. However, I accidentally bought some "fun chickens" that cannot live with my others due to issues. I have added two more chickens to live with them, and have a little pet flock of 4 now. They are almost...
I would wait until around the time of sunser, then go out and watch them roost. Then, go after them. You have to be creative though, because they love to roost in trees and other high-up places. My girls are bad, and they roost in trees all the time instead of going in the coop. If the tree they...
I have never had any lice problems myself, but everyone I know who had lice problems cleaned their coops fromceiling to floor until it was spotless, put lice dust in with the new bedding, put lice dust in the dust pit their chickens had made, and kept them in the yard until the lice were all...
Oh my. And here I am worrying about coyotes. Man those squirrels are wierd little animals. I never would have thought they would attack chickens because of the size difference, but you learn something new every day I guess.
I used to have a black star. Sadly she and 10 other girls were eaten by an opossum last summer. I still miss her, but now I have two dear little polish hens who take up most of my heart (and time). Black stars are such nice things though. They are full-chested birds, and my Latte had a floppy...
This happened to my girls. I had two marans that had been raised together, just the two of them. They were inseperable. Unfortunately, one of them (the one in my profile pic) was carried off by a coyote. For a few days, all the remaining one did was look for her sister. After that though, she...
I have been on both ends of this. Once the dog next door came right into the center of my 110 acre farm and was chasing my chickens up to one side of the run and then down to the other. I know he would have hurt them had they been free-ranging. Another time, my two dogs went off my property and...
