My flock of 10 coturnix quail are currently just over a year old. I am thinking of adding to my flock maybe another 7-8 birds. The source I am getting them from, their birds are 6 weeks old.
I am thinking of putting an inpenetrable yet transparent type divider in the pen for a while, either...
Hey all,
I currently have my quail in a sort of hybrid hutch/pen that has both solid and hardware clothed sides, and a 3 piece hinged flip open lid style. I am looking at changing to an aviary style enclosure, and adding more birds. Does one style of keeping lend itself to better egg...
Thanks for the response, I guess I didn't know LED christmas lights are bright enough or the right kind of light to stimulate laying. If that's the case that seems simple enough, and I may just go that route. My outdoor enclosure footprint wise is 40" X 7', so it wouldn't take too many.
Given the current state of egg production around the country and my region at large, I am coming to rely on my quails laying more for personal sustenance than for pure hobby and gifting to friends and relatives. In my area the magic "14 hours of daylight" wont be here for months and months and I...
I got 25 plastic clamshell type holders and 2 pairs of scissors from Amazon for $15.99, looks like they still have it
I like this style as opposed to a big bowl or something they can move around in, because I like to cycle eggs through where I organize them from freshest/that day’s eggs...
I want to incubate some eggs and have all hens currently. I would meet someone or even come to you if you are close enough and would be willing to pay something. I am in Southeast Iowa
I may have to just sit and observe for a while cuz I kinda think something like this is going on. There is one hen that is quite a bit larger than the others even though she was hatched with everyone else. I can't say for sure if that makes her a bully but maybe?
They do although I am not sure what the proper ratio is or how many I should have? I am always taking branches from the yard that blow down from storms and have leaves on them and throwing them in the pen. Also I have a few of those hollowed out half-log things that are for larger lizards in...
At this point I have only hens. Today I checked them when I woke up and gathered eggs, and I notice one with a bloody head? I’ve notice another baldy or two here and there since going “hens only”, but this is damage on par with what the boys were doing before they hit the freezer! What gives...
I guess I can ask? This is just a private party I found that happens to raise quail, not a farmer or breeder. She said she had extra roos she needed to get rid of to get her ratios proper, so I’m not sure how keen she would be on getting rid of a hen also, but I can see about it.
Supposing I...
I found someone in southern/southwestern Minnesota who is willing to get me one single rooster, which I was looking for! Its a pretty healthy drive for me that I can't really justify doing for one rooster, but does anyone have experience shipping one mature bird? This would be going from SW MN...
Thanks for the reply and addressing one of my concerns- i wondered about the logistics of moving them twice a week, as I could only really have them in there on weekends. I probably wont do this now, as one of my concerns was stressing/handling them too much
I am thinking of building a large “day pen” for my quails, like for on weekends when I am home all day, and can periodically check on them. Was thinking just have them on bare ground, and use metal fence posts and chicken wire for the sides and aviary netting for the top? Maybe secure the bottom...
