Thank you. When the younger chicks are large enough to be integrated with the older flock I generally will feed them all grower with oyster shell on the side for the layers. I hadn't thought that the older chickens could also be fed starter with oyster shell on the side. I appreciate your help!
Yes, I believe I saw that they still have the chick starter stock. Perhaps it would be better for me to give them more strarter than the layer then? I hadn't thought of that. I am familiar with the risk for younger chickens consuming the higher amount of calcium that is in layer feed.
Hello! I have some 9 week old chicks and am running low on their grower feed. I've had some on order with my feed store but the shipment still hasn't arrived. Hopefully they will have it in a few days. Will it be ok for me to feed the chicks the layer feed my older chickens eat if I run out of...
Thank you very much for your insights. My coop and run are covered and predator proof with hardware cloth over all openings, including windows, eaves, and the run door. Hardware cloth is also buried around all sides. Attached are a few photos for your reference. I plan to separate the run for...
I recently lost 6 of my 12 free range chickens to a predator attack so now have six new 3-week old chicks in a brooder in my house. I have a 140 sq. ft. secure run attached to my existing coop and plan to divide off half of it as a temporary run for the new chicks, which I'll move out in 3-4...
Thank you so much. There weren't a lot of mites on the chicken so I'll let the Permethrin do its work. Thank you for letting me know about the Captain Jack's product. I will make note of it.
One of my 12 chickens has mites and I usually use Elector PSP to treat them but since it's winter I used Permethrin powder and dusted all of my chickens yesterday. I also cleaned and dusted the coop and run. It's going to be near 40 degrees today and I'm wondering if I should spray the infected...
I have always fed my chickens the meal form of feed but today was accidentally given the pellet form. I didn't realize it until I dumped the 50# bag into the storage container. While both varieties of feed are nutritionally the same, will my chickens eat the pellets? They free range most days...
I just discovered that I have mites in my coop and am not sure how to treat the chickens and coop in the winter. I live in MN and the temps are below freezing now and will remain so for a while. I have used Elector PSP in the past on the chickens and throughout the coop with great success but am...
Thank you for your suggestion. I blocked the area with boxes and boards and although Daisy was not happy she did lay in a nesting box. I'll keep the area closed off for a while (I'll remove the boxes at night so the roost can be used) to be sure she knows where to lay.
One of my newer chickens has just begun laying and is doing so on top of the nesting boxes (see photo). I have tried moving her into one of the boxes to show her where to lay but she continues to go back on top. I have 13 chickens (four have not started to lay yet) and four nesting boxes. Since...
