I'm not sure if our method counts as deep litter, but our coop is three feet off the ground and the floor of the coop itself other then the nesting box is 1x2 wire mesh. The poop falls through it onto the heap underneath and then hubby opens the side flap when he needs manure for the garden and...
Well, that's why I was trying to emphasis the rain. People don't realise that when we say "rainy season" we do actually mean, a season where all it does is rain, sometimes lightly and sometimes 12 inches in 24 hours. And unless you visited for an extended period, you don't get the full effect of...
The rainy seasons where it rains for almost three months straight? HAHAHA! Thank goodness for 24/7 laundromats at those times, otherwise all the clothes stink like mildew! Gah!
We have 1"x2" wire mesh on our coop and I've never seen a mongoose in there. However, rats, mice, and sparrows are in and out like nothing. We did not put our girls out there though, until they were almost fully grown, and we also had a temp coop (where the rooster is now in solitary LOL!) where...
that pvc idea sounds awesome! so far they haven't dared to send more than a few intrepid exploratory parties, which were summarily executed by the fearsome chicken-guard. But I know down Keaau side, holy smoly with the car windows up AND the radio playing loud we could still hear them...
hmm i've no idea tbh. i've not been on here all that long. and sounds like you have loads of plans for a lovely farm. just a major word of advice: cut down any albizia trees near structures or power lines (or anything that you'd rather not have smashed). When Iselle hit Puna side last year, hooo...
Oh boy out in the boonies :D Lotsa room for chickies there and likely no neighbours complaining about them crowing at all hours either like sometimes they do in town... though having said that, there are feral chickens all over town, I see them on the way to work every morning
The rainfall...
@casportpony , @enola , @kharmon320 , thank you all for your very kind words. My head knows we did our best but other parts of me don't always listen to reason. Sigh. It's just been hard to lose four of our babies this year on top of all the other things we have to deal with. I thought our...
@casportpony , @enola : Thank you both, especially you Kathy, for all your wonderful help. Sadly, I found Princess dead in her crate when I went to weigh and feed her a few minutes ago. Hubby said he had a bad feeling last night. I'm trying not to beat myself up too much, we tried but I suspect...
ok i'm back from oahu (yay surgery was success!). Hubby did a good job of taking care of Mom and of Princess. Here is his status report for the day:
- 0800AM weight 1.913kg/4lb3-3/8oz
- crate poop looks like normal poop
- checked crop, mostly empty (YAY) and squishy
- gave one mashed egg and...
1800, got another 20cc into her.
Edit: 1930, got a final 15cc for the day into her crop. She'd put herself to bed, walked from 2 ft away from the dog crate and tucked herself into the back of it. Yay! I felt bad waking her up but better for her I guess.
@casportpony
1645, got 20cc into her, and her crop is definitely going down now. Can I get away with feeding her a mashed egg now or should I only keep on with another 2 batches of water before I put her to bed?
1515PM got 15cc of h2o into her this time. She also made a normal poop on the towel and was walking around a little on top of the washing machine, which let me finally get a quick look at her rear end. I don't see any lesions or anything but pink skin and poopy feathers. the vent looks clear...
