Snickerdoodle is a beautiful black/iridescent Ameraucana, 11-month old hen. She started laying beautiful bluish/greenish eggs around 6 months.
For the last few months though, something is not right. Some days it is a thin-shelled egg. Sometimes it's so thin that cracks in an almost powdery way...
Thanks @DesertChic! It makes me feel better to know that they are all chubby, and not just mine. I was worried I wasn't taking good care of her. Just an overweight bird breed!
Hey! Thank you so much for your reply! No rooster in our flock, only hands. But I've definitely seen one bully and action so I may try removing her. Dumpling seems to be doing much better now that she is clean.
Preen oil gland! Wow! You just blew my mind. I've never heard of such a thing...
Last week I lost my Bielefelder Chickpea to Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome. I knew she was a big bird, we called her Chubby Chubby Chickpea, I had no idea it was a risk to her. She died at 3.1 kg. Has anyone else gone through this?
Hey everyone, this is Dumpling. She is a bit of a loner. Doesn't really hang out with the other chickens, and gets bullied by Hennifer, the queen of our flock.
I noticed in the last couple of months she was looking rough. Lost a bunch of feathers on the back of her head/neck and along her...
Friday Fluffybutt and her feather faux-hawk! She's getting to be my favourite. She jumps up to the perch when I come outside in the hopes of mealworms... which she usually gets. Her face is getting redder which means egg-laying is around the corner. Fingers crossed for blue eggs!
I bought 2 ICB eggs from Eva at Mt Lehman Acres in BC. 1 pullet (Friday Fluffybutt) and 1 cockerel (Freckle). Freckle couldn't stay in the city so he's on a new farm living the dream.
Friday lives here in the city (Vancouver) and should start laying next month. I'll be sure to share some pics of...
Meet Betty White!
She's a funny little character.
At around 2 months we had to give her a haircut because her poof was covering her little eyes!
And today, I need to figure out what to do about her filthy face! She is about 3 1/2 months old.
@Kilkilkorken I am so sad to share that Mezzo did not make it. She died at 6 days. It looked like she was getting better and then she very quickly got worse and died peacefully. Best of luck, it's always hard when we have a sick one.
Came home to a pasty bum on my sweet little 4-day-old chick. Then noticed a small air bubble on the back of her neck by her wing. It has grown in the last hour so it's now visible from the front,
I think it's a ruptured air sac and so am I supposed to poke it with a sterile needle and hope it...
So we are pretty sure it is Mushy Chick Syndrome/Mushy Chick Disease/Omphalitis. I had noticed the sac when she was inside the egg (when we brought her in the house) so she must have either gotten infected as she was sitting alone in the nest half open, or while inside the egg.
I wanted to keep...
