    Rooster is killing my hens

I am going through pretty much the same thing at the moment. Sunday I found my silver laced wyandotte dead in the pen with no apparent injuries, so we had no idea what was happening. Then today I found my production red dead in the pen. This time it was quite obvious something killed her. I...

Strange growth near eye of young cockerel, could it be pox?

Well, the craziest thing. When I went out to check on him again last night right before closing the coop I was shocked...it was gone!!! It looks like there is still a mark there but the growth like thing is gone! So it got me thinking something and I'm going to get a better look at it here in a...

Strange growth near eye of young cockerel, could it be pox?

I didn't try to remove it because I didn't know if I should. When I firs noticed it last night at coop closing it was flat so I thought it may had been part of a leaf (in this heat they stay under the big tree in their pen) but this morning it looked like the pictures. I hadn't thought of a...

Strange growth near eye of young cockerel, could it be pox?

I have two 3 month old Mottled Java cockerels and one has a strange 'growth' on his face very near his eye. I am not sure what it is. Anything I have been able to find is fowl pox. This morning we were able to catch him and I applied iodine to it (little creep isn't so trusting now so having...

Thinking of getting a roo for my mixed flock

Good idea. I had considered an Orpington roo since it is an Orpington that is trying to be broody. Makes sense. But colorful eggs are fun too. :D Definitely something to think about. Thank you

Thinking of getting a roo for my mixed flock

I have a pretty mixed flock consisting of a Production Red, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, an EE, 2 Barred Rocks and 3 Orpingtons. One Orpington is trying to go broody. I had previously considered a roo and am now thinking more seriously about it. My problem is I don't know what breed I should get...

    Hen stopped laying

I have a couple of hens that were laying and then have stopped. My Production Red is almost 2 years old and was looking like she was starting to molt recently and stopped laying. She is looking better but hasn't started to lay again. My Silver Laced Wyandotte is almost a year and has been a...

    Hens have completely stopped laying

I am going to follow this thread because I have been having a similar problem. Although a much smaller flock. Very erratic egg production. I also have one that her eggs seem to vary in color from time to time, they get a nice brown then it is as if they fade and are almost white, no clue why...

Comment by 'SSFowler' in article '9 Structures You Won't Believe Are Chicken Coops!'

They are all so creative and cool it is hard to choose just one! I'd be proud if my coop even came close to resembling any of them but.....WOW..... that gypsy wagon!!!!

    Limping hen

Just an update. She is showing marked improvement. The limp is still there but not as bad as it first was and not always noticeable. The other hens are not showing any signs of a limp so I am pretty certain it was just an injury. The timing of it really had me worried though. But, the past...

    Do you name your birds?

I named ours too but the only thing they answer to is the rattle of the bag of snacks! Since our flock is still quite small(4) and all different they are easy to tell apart. My Barred Rock is Hen Solo, my Ameracauna is Princess Lay-a, Goldie is a golden sex link and Ginger is a production red. I...

    Limping hen

I'm hoping it is only a sprain. It is sad to watch and makes me worry. But she really isn't showing signs of illness, so maybe I wont be too concerned about her eggs, yet. Thank you for your input, I don't feel quite so helpless or at a loss now. :thumbsup

    Limping hen

Update. We were actually able to catch her yesterday, she's still pretty quick. But, there were no visible sores, bruises or blisters. We made sure there were no burrs in her feet and toes. There didn't seem to be any swelling or heat. She didn't even seem upset that we were messing with her...

    Limping hen

I plan to examine the leg as soon as my husband gets home to help me catch her. She is limping but is still pretty quick and comes very close to us but no a fan of physical contact. I will also be double checking their run for anything that could have caused this. We only allow them to free...
