    Hens experiencing lameness - mycotoxins?

I also meant to add that I feed my hens Nature's Best Organic Layer Pellets - I bring their feed in at night and store in a metal trash can.

    Hens experiencing lameness - mycotoxins?

Hi Everyone ~ it's been a long while since I've posted anything but the forums have always been such a wonderful source of information and knowledge and I thank you all in advance for your help. This may be a bit long so I apologize in advance! I've been raising backyard chickens for about 13...

    Someone please help

Oh I'm so sorry about your Mr. Jack! I can totally relate...my sweetest ever rooster, Daisy, was taken by some unknown predator a few weeks ago - I was at home (talking on the phone with my daughter) and heard Daisy 'talking' with the girls. I ignored it for a few minutes until the carrying on...

Respiratory Issue - should I cull my hen?

Wow! Thank you SO much for taking the time to call Dr. Butcher! Yes, I would have rather not treated with antibiotics either but was assuming that if I didn't take measures quickly, she might get much worse. It's so hard to know exactly what to do - how far to go to treat, etc. Raising...

Respiratory Issue - should I cull my hen?

Thank you everyone! I just checked on her and she does have runny, green, poop and is standing with her eyes half closed. So, you all seem to be in agreement - treat her until she seems all better and add her back to flock? Thank you so much!

Respiratory Issue - should I cull my hen?

Should I cull my hen? My 7 month old Barred Rock which I've raised from a day old chick, started having respiratory issues about a week ago. (her symptoms were raspy breathing, not coming off roost in the morning ~ not runny eyes, etc.) I removed her from the rest of the flock (8 others)...

Review by '' on item 'Ameraucana'

I have had 3 Ameracanas and they have all been rather skittish - however, my most recent one is not nice at all! As a matter of fact, her main goal is to walk around and PECK any other hen that she sees. All 9 of the other girls avoid her at all costs! Yikes. I'm trying to decide how to...

    When do Maran's typically lay?

My Black Copper Marans hen laid her first egg at about 18 or 19 weeks old - the EXACT same day as my Black Ameracauna! I was so surprised but thrilled beyond belief to see one blue and one dark brown egg in the next box! Yours should be laying very soon! :D

My 22 week old Hen is now laying soft eggs

I wanted to let you know that my Black Copper Marans hen laid a perfectly normal, hard egg this morning - just like she's back to normal. So...not sure what that was all about but thank you again for all of your help and advice! I'm sure I'll continue to learn and be amazed at the various...

My 22 week old Hen is now laying soft eggs

Thank you Terry for your quick response! I'll continue to keep an eye on her to see if I can see anything out of the ordinary going on - their coop is very secure at night (I put a LOCK on each of the doors when I close them up at night) but, there could be something prowling around undetected...

Hi Everyone - I would love to get some help/advice regarding my 22 week old Black Copper Marans hen who just started laying soft eggs. Here is my scenario: She laid her first egg at about 17 weeks old and from the start they were perfectly shaped, hard, dark brown eggs. I only have two hens...

    Got illegal chickens?

I just had to jump in with a funny story. We also have 3 'illegal' chicks that will be going out to a small coop in a few weeks. Our UPS man (who is also a friend and goes to our church) came by the other day and noticed our small coop on the side of the driveway ~ our driveway is very...
