It sounds like your pens are similar to what I built. I used 1/2" x 1" wire for the floors though. It's heavier guage and seems to be pretty comfortable for them. I would worry about 3/4" square allowing feet to slip through. but I don't have any to test on my birds for you.

Once upon a time there was a really nice little thread specifically on butchering quail...and I can't find it back for the life of me. Doesn't look like I saved the link. Anyone know what I'm talking about and have the link? Kind of stretch I know but I'm drivin myself crazy trying to find it...

You can try to find soybean meal or hulls (feed mill may have it). I've seen mealworms/darkling beetles doing quite well in spills of straight up soymeal...might work in a bin too.

My worms are growing like crazy but still waiting for them to start to pupate... *impatient*
