I woke up this morning thinking we had a turkey in the back yard... all that gobbling noise. Turns out it was one of the young roos, trying to crow! Laughed my head off!
Well, this is a bit of an angry/violent response as well. Maybe we all should step back and disassociate feelings from the issue. It seems tempers are a bit high.
Great idea - making them their own garden. My dill is very weak, and my parsley almost gone. I think I just rescued the rosemary and all else is doing well. The mint here is huge so they evidently haven't had a chance to smash it to pulp yet.
I had to fence off my herbs in my garden. At first, when the chicks were old enough to wander the back yard, they took an extreme interest in the garden and were hiding out in the herbs. I didn't have a problem with this until my plants started dying and I discovered they had scratched up some...
Reminds me of my grandmother. She had a house in Berkeley CA with a lovely back yard, pond with goldfish... cats would often visit. She had a BB gun she kept in her closet, which had a window that faced the back yard. My little, sweet, well educated, high-classed lady of a grandmother would...
My cat is afraid of my chickens! Seriously - he'll go outside, see them and come back in again. But yeah, deter that bully cat. Wish I knew what to offer for advice there.
Copperheads are evil. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I don't bother them as long as they stay in their space, away from mine. I don't like killing anything either, but if something is dangerous, you have to get rid of it. I never bother the garden snakes; I just relocate them. But...
A few pics today from the Bethpage newbie! One is of some beautiful butterflies (one of many) and the others of our 9 wk old (finally figured out the age) chickens - six of them. Can't tell roos from hens yet..
Mine are still a bit young but I suspect 3-4 of my 6 10wk old RIRs are roos. You are welcome to all but one of them! I'm in Bethpage and in school but could come down at some point. You may have to wait a bit til I find out which are which. Esp since I am very new to this and not sure what is...
Today I discovered my 10 week old RIRs are intensely curious! I still don't know which are roos and which are hens, but they are endlessly entertaining. Their coop is at the end of the fenced off part of the back yard (not too big of an area). They've been a bit skittish but are always looking...
