    My first homemade incubator

That is AWESOME! I usually see homemade incubators made out of old mini-fridges, I never thought of a simple plastic container. I may have to try this myself, after I get another rooster.

    Anyone interested in egg development?

I have a picture of the pre-laid eggs that were inside a hen that got unexpectedly culled by my dog. Is anyone interested in what the eggs look like before they get their shells? If so I will post the pic. Let me know.

*A little graphic* First time plucking...funny in a weird way.

Yeah, I'll say. Didn't keep me from putting her in the stock pot though. I did discover a weeks worth of eggs 'in waiting' including todays contribution just waiting for its shell. So sad, she was just coming into her good laying years!

*A little graphic* First time plucking...funny in a weird way.

WARNING - this is a dead chicken story. Please leave now if the thought bothers you! So an hour ago, my son hollers for me to 'Come QUICK!' I arrive on the back porch (mumbling about how this BETTER be GOOD) to find one of my 16yo twin boys cradling a chicken in his arms. She got out of the...

Loosing hens with no apparent reason....any ideas?

I am so glad you posted...Sorry for your losses... I am finding dead chickens too. I started out with 40, and in the last week I have found at least 1 dead a day. These are all apparently healthy birds. I have started a Solumet regimen for 3 days (morning waters) and electrolytes too in their...

    Going solar

This sounds like such a great idea! Please post updates as you put it together and use it, I am moving next week and will have a one story outbuilding in which to put my calf (currently kept at a friends), but it has an addition for the chicken coop with runs. I would love to start converting...

    Square Footage vs. Volume?

I used a 10 x 12 barn style shed. The birds loved to roost on the rafters. We installed platforms on either side which created an aisle down the middle. During the day the chickens would stay on the ground or the shelves, but at night they were all up top. It was nice when it came time to cull...

Does anyone have silkies, welsummers, americanas or murans 4-sale NE OH

I saw your post and the person I got mine from has a listing on craigslist for your area. It was posted july 29th and the heading is Chicks and Pullets. You didn't say if you were looking for show quality or just general beauty and temperment. I loved the Welsummers I got from her, they were...

    Post your Red Star eggs

In that case, I am getting a majority of small brown eggs, but I think my bigger red sex links are giving me these Ultra Jumbo brown eggs that dont fit in the carton. Most of my eggs have darker brown spots. I currently have red sex links, RIR, and BO's that are my brown egg layers. I'll have to...

Frozen eggs....are they 'good' or trash?

Okay, so the temps got way low last night (4 degrees at midnight) and even tho I keep a heat light in the hen house, I found some frozen and cracked eggs this morning. *My younger twin boy is really terrible at looking for eggs and it was his turn yesterday, so today I pulled out 32 eggs, of...

    Lighting?

I certainly dont know what is BEST, but I am using a pink indoor flood light that puts off a good amount of heat. With temps in the 5-25 degree F range, they need the heat to keep warm. I am leaving it on all the time, being pink, they still get their sleep and my oldest rooster still starts...

food + water , in coop or out, conterversy

All summer I fed and watered in the run. Most nights only the older wiser birds went in the coop to sleep. 2 weeks ago, i moved half the feeders and waterers into the coop to get them adjusted. Over the next month we will be putting in new nesting boxes. Once we are done getting the birds ready...
