Thats what I thought. I want the dominant white to take out the black in my buff based colour. But I am not doing that if the chick down is going to be white or too light, because of the barring. So that kinda changes alot for me... Feeling blind not realizing this a bit earlier. But it doesnt...
Thank you 😀
I dont think I have recessive white, only the dominant. The father of these chick does not have dominant or recessive white (they are pure bred in colour). But the hens are dominant white in either two or one copy.
Do you know if the dominant white always will show in chick down...
They are here!
I got 8 chicks in total, 8 out of 9 eggs. I have two other groups in the machine as well, so I will end up with about 30 chicks in total if I have a good hatching rate (as I should).
This is what I got in the first hatch:
2 chicks with buff columbian icelandic hen as mother...
Yes, I also thought alot about that. Wild birds do NOT lay hundreds of eggs, and birds lay eggs to hatch chicks - not to produce food for us humans... But chickens has been selectively bred to produce eggs in a whole different way than wild birds will lay eggs.
Even though chickens are bred by...
Well, based on what happened now with such an decrease in egg laying, and I also have one hen that actually looks almost sick (she is pale in her comb, was laying fine until 1 week ago). She got a vitamin shot and some probiotics and oregano oil (her poo was really loose), in addition to protein...
Thank you for your fast reply!!
I don't think the feed change was abrupt, no, because they have been eating the natural feed for a year, with addition of pellets.
No, I can't see any extra feathers on the ground yet. And all of my hens are too young to moult now, but I read they could go...
@Perris
I need some input from you! I started feeding my chickens all natural feed about 2-3 weeks ago. I slowly faded out the pellets.
For these two weeks they have been given dried mealworms (my factory is not up working yet, so I bought big bags of dried ones), sprouted seeds (wheat...
SO... My first eggs for Steinahons is hatching now!! I will update when they are out! I am so excited to see the e-alleles on the chick down and to see if they are looking what I assume they will look like!
I thought I would share some information about my other breed project as well. It's also great to have a "diary" to go back to for myself.
For those who read the original post, I started out with the melanistic skin combined with brown egg colour, barring and a buff based colour. The only thing...
Hi! How exciting! I think breed projects are so much fun and sure gives me alot of dopamin 😂
Based on what you are describing in your breed description I would say the Jaerhone is pretty much all you just described though. I dont know how easy they are to get where you live. I had several...
Well, we have been waiting for the roosters to mate and for the hens to lay eggs... They are now doing both!
A couple of weeks ago we tried putting some of the eggs in the incubator, it was too early, as all of the eggs were empty.
I'll give it a new try today!! These eggs are from the last...
Thank you so much for this!! Really interesting. Especially regarding loss rate and how many who grows up to be healthy and all that.
What are your experience with coccidiosis and marek's disease after changing to natural feed? I struggle with both, coccidiosis in the summer with chickens...
So... I am not pleased with the manufactured chicken feed you get in the stores... Their main protein source are based on plants, and basically contains alot of corn, soya and low quality grains. And it is expensive - even though it of course make the feeding easier. It gives me a bad feeling of...
Anyone here good at sexing single barred chicks? I am a bit confused over this hatch and struggle with some of the chicks here.
I hatched 9 chicks. Hen is Cream Legbar (B and e+e+). Rooster is Leghorn in the colour lavender (not barred, and he is also e+e+). He could be split to silver Ss or...
That is so cool! Love it. Thank you for posting photos.
I have never seen a lavender silkie, but they look really nice. I love the lavender gene as well. Have you had any challenges with bad feathers combining the lavender gene with the silkie "fur"?
I have a lavender leghorn rooster that I...
