entered the world of having chickens on a sure what the heck moment. My daughter’s class hatched 3, and they didn’t have homes for them so I figured eh why not?! Long story short, the teacher ended up keeping them because she was attached, but didn bother letting us know until 2 days after we were supposed to bring them home. So to keep a 14 year old girl happy we did a bit of research (since we now had choices!!!), and headed out to pick up 4 silkie chicks. With my wonderful luck we ended up getting 3 roosters (I have had horrible luck right from the beginning with getting mostly roosters!) , and 1 hen…lol We ended up trading a silkie rooster for a buff Orpington and it was seriously the best trade ever!!! Our little Gwen was the perfect companion for our Silkie hen Drumstick. My 2 girls were well known up and down our old street, and shared their love with everyone that would share a bit of food…Unfortunately we lost Gwen last summer, and brought in a Golden laced Wyandotte, a light Brahma, and a Khaki Campbell duck trying to make little Miss. Drummy happy again, and while she’s grateful for the company none of them have just clicked with her like Gwen did. My sister decided to surprise my son with a Golden Laced Polish this spring, because he wanted one for the past 2 years, and due to the Avian Flu her order had been canceled so she just picked some up at the local Tractor Supply who didn’t have any Polish unfortunately. A week and a half after she brought home 18 baby chicks she received an email stating her order was on the way, and to be sure to be at the post office first thing in the morning to pick them up…So not only did we end up getting his Polish, but I ended up getting a Spotted Sussex, and a black Cochin. Can I just say Luci (my Cochin) warms my heart every time I see her! From her feathery legs (the legs slay me every time haha), to her snuggling up under my hair and not wanting to come out or get down, this 8 week old chick has me completely wrapped around her little feet! If I’d had any clue about how much having chickens (and a duck!) would change my life for the better I would’ve gotten them a long, long time ago… I smile and laugh at their crazy antics, and mad dashes every time I shake the mealworm bag, I cried and grieved with Miss. Drummy over Gwen, and just plain enjoy the heck out of my girls! Never again will I not have at least a few chickens roaming around my yard! They are hands down one of the best pets we’ve ever had!!!
