    Big umbilical attachment

i just had one hatch that had the same thing.. initially it looked like something stuck in the vent, but then the chick pulled herself free of it, 5 minutes or so after hatching. It has a round, flat end, like I'd expect something that sealed itself off and detatched (like an umbilical cord)...

    11th Annual Easter Hatch a Long 2020

I think you can still join. I mean, you are "hatching along" no matter what, but joining [send a message to @casportpony with details..] let's your hatch "count" in some contests. The "How many eggs set for EHAL?" contest is closed and done, yours probably cant count there. The "How many will...

    Can chickens eat cake

Very nice cake! But, yes, the issue with chocolate is one of its main flavor compounds - theobromine - which is toxic to many animals. Also. I think chickens aren't equipped to digest milk products (milk fats, proteins, sugars) so much of the frosting would pass through them (if they'd even...

    11th Annual Easter Hatch a Long 2020

As CluckNDoodle said, it's all up to @casportpony - "official" registry is by a PM to them with how many eggs you've set and expected hatch dates for each. I read somewhere that hatches due within 3 days +/- of Saturday 4/11, will count in the contests (how many set, farthest shipped etc..)...

I just paced it off... 11 yards here... (I watched too much "Price is Right" as a kid.....)

That's awesome - I love the clear dome! I went last week to buy a second one, and all they had on the shelves were the "white top, clear belt, hidden rear vent" versions, and I was concerned that I had gotten one of the last of the clear dome type. Glad to hear it's the other way around. The fan...

    11th Annual Easter Hatch a Long 2020

This photo perfectly illustrates my only complaint with my NR360 (and somehow, though I bought it new 3 weeks ago, it says "ver.1" in the manual and has the clear wrap-over dome with the more visible air vent on the front side (which I prefer anyway..)). My complaint is with the unit's candler...

Coop gems -what is the one feature of your coop you couldnt live without?

For me, its definitely the self filling water bucket hard plumbed into my house water system. Its 4 nipples screwed into a full size 5 gallon food grade bucket, hanging on two shelf brackets, with water supply piped down into the top to a standard toilet fill valve. No more of the daily bucket...

Generally speaking, a given mass of air, with a given mass of evaporated water in it, will have different RH readings at different temperatures, because cooler air can hold less moisture, and RH is "the moisture you have" as a percentage of "the maximum amount that air can hold at a specific...

    11th Annual Easter Hatch a Long 2020

I've had my 10 chickens for 2 years.. I bought my incubator on 3/14 right after I saw this: That's a Walmart Supercenter egg section sold out - panic buying on 3/13. Less than 12 dozen of the "premium" eggs remain (non-GMO, organic, Omega-3 boosted, whatever..). My birds already lay more eggs...

"Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the Sun... But Mama, that's where the fun is!" I wonder if the intensity of the light could be painful/stressful to the developing chick, or even impair eye development. Most bird species are reported to have excellent eyesight, but chickens...

    Feeder Build

They are pushing some out of the ends. If I built another, I'd have the trough end caps about 3" taller, and I'd put 3 dividers the same height along each trough.. I agree with an earlier observation in this thread, that chickens seem to prefer to peck their food out of corners.. it's probably...

I thought you were using a Hovabator, because I found a post where you said so. My plan details (cell addresses, cells per quadrant etc..) were based on the Hovabator egg turner holding 42 eggs in a 7x6 grid...
