From an egg I found on the ground out in the open, I now have a newly hatched Eurasian collared dove. These guys are invasive and no one will take it, so I am going to give this a shot.
Should I start feeding this hatchling in 12 hours or sooner? Do they need to be fed at night?
Current plan...
I ammend my earlier statement about the quiet pipped egg -- I held it up to my ear and tapped a little, and can hear very soft chirps and a grinding sound. If it's making chewing motions with its beak (what I assume that sound to be) that probably means it is still absorbing yolk, right?
I have two pea eggs on day 25 now in the incubator. One of them was externally pipped yesterday morning at 3 am, the other was internally pipped for an unknown number of hours at the same time, so I made a tiny safety air hole in that egg yesterday evening.
It's now been over 24 hours and the...
Happy to report that all three are doing just fine and already have vibrant personalities. Mozart, despite being the biggest, is the most timid and cries at everything. The grey runt Gershwin is the boss and a firecracker, and black bibbed Schubert is the friendliest and most independent. She...
Yeah...this was the egg that started zipping immediately after the first pip. Rested half way through then popped out early this morning, very vocal and ambulating all over the incubator, so I'm concerend that he's suddenly acting so differently. But, I also haven't seen him close his eyes much...
Ok so this morning Mozart (silvery colored, no idea what he'll turn out to be) and the smallest egg Gershwin (assuming grey/mallard-colored) joined us. Mozart has begun acting a little worrisome -- he was very active and seemed fine earlier, but when I went to check on them just now he has a...
Yeah...I wasn't expecting much, throughout the whole thing I knew that if I at least got two it would be awesome since they'd have each other. A trio sounds just as good as long as they all accept each other.
The bigger of the two incubator eggs is fierce...I swear he'll bust out tonight. Super...
Ok, update. I decided to chisel a small hole into the air cell portion of each egg above. Both were dead. The blood spot/black spot egg looked like it was just about to peck through the egg shell. It had broken through the membrane and was in good position...but I think it ruptured a vessel. The...
Ok, the first few are of the same egg. Sorry for the quality but you can make out the yellowish round orb sorta sticking into the air cell.
The next pic is another egg that is weird. It's developed these dark spots within the last day, dark enough that you can see them through the shell. Ideas...
Thanks! She's a cutie.
I removed her to finish drying and re-positioned the other eggs. Of the remaining 4, one has now externally pipped. I quickly candled the others (a few seconds each) because a few are presenting a little oddly and I wanted to check on things. In one egg, you can clearly...
Little Schubert is here! Brooder is set up but I'll leave her be until she's fluffy. Hoping her siblings will soon follow suit! My first hatched egg, ever!!
