Lighting Question - LED Lights for a small coop?

Hello, I was thinking about using an Luxeon LED Light Fixture for my small coop for winter supplemental lighting. Has anybody else done this, or even looked into it? I have one of these 1watt leds in my headlamp and it is extremely bright so I thought these would be nice to try a fixture with...

    Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

I have been using store bought apple cider vinegar, but I have a few gallons I have been brewing since last year, I suppose it is about time to pull it out and use it (extra stuff from testing my cider press). It is almost as simple as making good hard cider, but you make sure that the cider is...

Small Split in the beak, will super glue work?

We trimmed the beak yesterday, and filed it a little bit (with a manicure set scouring pad) and she seems to be doing better today. The beak was overlapping the lower beak maybe this is why it split in the first place.

Small Split in the beak, will super glue work?

Hmm, I didn't know you could trim it. I will try and get a better picture tomorrow, auto-focus isn't always the greatest thing. They all get to go out in the run and run around the backyard when we are home. What do you use to trim the beak, I don't think normal toe-nail type would work (seems...

Small Split in the beak, will super glue work?

Okay, I cropped the picture, but it is still large, and a bit blurry. I decided a picture of any kind might help, I will get a better one tomorrow hopefully.

Small Split in the beak, will super glue work?

Howdy, Oh lovely red sex-link Pauline has a small split in her beak from the tip to up the ridge about 5mm (~1/16"?). It has about a .5mm gap at the tip and of course gets smaller as it goes up the beak. I know super glue (not crazy glue) was designed to seal up wounds in the battlefield, and...

Where did you get your chickens' names

From our Grandmothers (1 is a step-grandmother). They are all prim and proper ladies, after all!

    signs egg laying is imminent?

I take it back- I think each chicken is different in the way they act before laying their first egg! We woke up early to the sounds of "Bok-Bok-Bok-BOGAWWWWWWWWKKKK!!!!" and found Elsie (she's a BSL) pacing around the cage, throwing an absolute hissy fit (granted, she has always been the high...

    My chickens killed a mockingbird-normal????

When our girls were still a couple months old they almost managed to kill a Scrub Jay! They are very close to our cat (sometimes I think that they believe he is also a chicken, or maybe that they are cats!) and watched him chase and knock down the bird. When it landed on the ground, they all ran...

    signs egg laying is imminent?

Quote: Actually, she was quite silent all day. She just waddled off after laying her second egg, pretty much oblivious to what had happened. The girls have been squaking so loudly all week long, that we noticed something was different just by how calm and quiet she was!

    signs egg laying is imminent?

Greetings! We got our first egg just yesterday, so today was spent with excited, anticipated vigil. Around noon I noticed that Colleen (RSL) was standing away from the other girls quietly closing her eyes and looking extra fluffy. She was very still and her butt was wiggling (what an obvious...

    Need help raising mealworms

http://www.efinch.com/mealworms/mealworm.htm Meal worm raising guide off of a google search, I hope that helps! I don't think you should refrigerate them if you want them to actually grow. I know you buy lady bug larvae at the garden center in the refrigerator and then let them thaw out and...

    Gardening question:PLEASE HELP

Insecticidal soap, DE, or home made insecticidal soap. I used DE (purchased just this weekend) around the edges of my garden to prevent slugs and ants from coming around. I actually haven't had a problem with slugs now that I have my ladies around. I was starting to have a problem with flies...

Need help finding DE for fly control

If you are in Oregon, Wilco (Willamette Valley Farmer's Coop) carries 40lbs bags of DE. I bought a bag this weekend, I had to wait about 20 minutes as they searched the warehouse for it, they ended up finding it under the peanuts of all places (gimmi a bag extra for the wait, my chickens love...
