Hello,
We kept Nugs and the new Roo. They get along well. I sectioned off the run until they younger ones were the same size about 16-20 weeks. I let the big ones out of the run and allowed the younger ones have free run in the coop and the run. It worked out well. Thanks so much for all...
Mine also "leave it" when told. We have 2 dogs we got as strays. One is a lab mix who herds the chickens and the chickens love her. The other is a beagle mix who is obsessed with small creatures. Needless to say with the beagle who is a hunting breed, we do not leave unsupervised with the...
Thanks! When you let them free range, how do you keep them safe from predators? We lost one of our Plymouth Barred Rock to a hawk. We have since put chicken wire on the top of the run but only let them free range when someone is outside or our dog cookie is there.
We know how hard the math is! We only wanted 8 but had to order 15 minimum. Well, the shipment came in with 17. This year, we went in for 6 but they were buy 12 and get 6 half off. So, we ended up with 12. The hard part now will be trying to integrate them in about 16 weeks.
Thanks for the information! Yes, we did get the Cornish X as meat birds and they will last about 8-12 weeks. Most of the birds we got are dual purpose except the Cornish X. So if the new set of chicks (other than the Cornish X) contain a rooster, I can integrate it with the existing flock...
Hello,
I agree that at 2-3 weeks they do need an external heat source. As far as the light, it won't bother them. If there is one on the roost, is it because it is closer to the light (meaning warmer)? Since the others are dog piled, it is probably still a little too cool. Good Luck!
Hello,
We have a current flock of chickens: 6 Plymouth Barred Rock Hens and 9 Buff Orpingtons (1 is a Rooster). We love them and this year got more. 4 Cornish X, 4 Black Astralopes, 2 RIR, and 2 Isa's. They are not sexed so I imagine we will get some roosters in the group. One is calling...
Thanks so much! We have wanted chickens for a few years and are finally able to get them.We went to Tractor Supply and that is who they order from. The chicks all looked healthy so we went online and looked and ordered with a ship date ofApril 16th. We are so pleased that this forum is...
We just ordered 8 Buff Orpingtons and 7 Barred Plymouth Rocks and should get them April 18th. We are also first timers and really excited! We just ordered them from Mt Healthy. We live in Maine and want cold hardy and docile hens. Saw a great post that they were going to photo document their...
