    I know that this is an old thread but I'm in Mission TX. Just curious how your chicken ranch turned out. We started ours in January with 8 pullets but have lost some and gained two rabbits.

    I was a fan of the PBS repeats in the 70's and 80's. Loved watching Tom Baker as a kid. I'm a big fan of the new series as well. I introduced my wife to the Doctor when we were dating. It's amazing how many people are fans. I see evidence of fans everywhere down here in the valley.

    I posted earlier asking for ideas about leaving town and having the chickens taken care of. Thank you for your responses. I learned a few things and will most likely use them.

    Looking for ideas. What do you do when you leave town? Do you have a neighbor care for your chickens, do you hire somebody, do you avoid leaving so that you can care for your chickens? Now that I've decided to have our urban farm I am wondering what to do for extended stays away from home...

    I just started raising them in January. Easy temperament and fun to watch. Should be good layers according to my research. So, free is good, But be warned, if these are your first birds, you'll get addicted fast.

    Oh, such a bad day yesterday. Came back from school to the high squeal chirps of little chicks. Went to check on them and realized that the room was cold. Probably 68 degrees. A chick was standing on top of a lifeless sister when I looked in the box. The heater had cycled off and never came...

    Here are the replacements. The black one (Derk) was given to us and this past weekend I picked up two more reds so Derk wouldn't be so lonely. She makes a great big sis to the tiny ones. Added two rabbits to the farm. Not sure what they are, maybe someone can help me identify? I think...

    Okay, so the back story. I quit a very good job as a government agent and decided to go back to school to complete my nursing degree. When I did this my wife (knowing my intent to homestead) told me that I could raise animals if I didn't spend a lot of money. So, I looked for wood and stuff...

    That's what I did. I took a dresser and turned it upside down, screwed it to a wooden pallet, took the drawers out and doors off and then constructed a roof from salvaged wood slats. I had to buy 2x4's but total cost to me was less than $20. I'll try to post a picture in a little bit.
