2 Dominique pullets
1 BSL pullet
1 Ameraucana / EE pullet
1 Polish x Bantam Wyandotte cross hen (at least that's best guess)
1 Game Bantam cross hen
Can't wait for the pullets to start laying so I have normal sized eggs!
I don't have experience with the others, but I can almost guarantee you that the Doms are both pullets. My little girls looked identical to that at that age. The two cockerels I ended up with were much lighter and had already started developing their red combs and wattles.
Thanks for the info! I found a home for the boys easily, so it wasn't much of a big deal. One had the larger headspot and slightly lighter legs, so I suspected it could be male very early on. But the other had almost no head spot and the darkest legs of the bunch. But sure enough he feathered in...
That's not far at all! Knisely's is a feed store in Carlisle, I was asking in case anyone knew which hatchery they used. They get a large variety of chicks and have their breed order schedule online. I picked up 5 hatchery quality Dominiques and an EE from them in March, all sexed as pullets...
For the standard eggs, eat them of course! Any extras (I'm sure we'll have tons with 6 new pullets now) I give away to friends and family. Our bantam hens produce wonderfu little bitty eggs that are perfect for adding raw to dog kibble! A healthy treat for the dogs and it's like they're just the...
My experience in taming an adult bird:
My Yuengling came to me as a two year old bird that had never been handled. She was living on a farm and is pretty predator savvy (i.e. wouldn't let me within 10 feet of her). When I brought her home she was an absolutely wild girl, refused to sleep in...
I have an 8 week old Ameraucana / probably EE. She was sexed as a pullet. I think her comb flushes easily, as it doesn't always appear this bright pink, and isn't too much brighter than my Dominique pullets'.
Thankfully my flock consists of just two bantam hens, so I was able to let standard pullets in with them around 6 weeks without too much of an issue due to similar size. Unfortunately, due to predation, I lost both of the pullets about a month later :( . So, here I am beginning the integration...
I'm also 25 with my first feed store hatchery Dom chicks! I'm loving them already! I had been planning on only keeping one for myself and giving the rest to a friend who hates brooding chicks (I like a varied flock). Two of the five Dom "pullets" have grown into cockerels unfortunately, so I'll...
