Broken leg: Can I safely remove the splint after 4 weeks?

Sunshine broke her leg 4 weeks ago. Not sure how she did it. My fabulous vet, Keith Gold at Chadwell Animal Hospital in Belair, Maryland (443 512 8338), xrayed the leg and set it. It's now in a splint. I have an appointment with him to rexay and probably remove the spint. I frankly don't...

Raising single chick in a brooder?

Thursday, I'll be given a newborn chick to raise and eventually introduce to my hen. Can a chick be raised by itself in a brooder or does it absolutely need other chicks with it? I'm raising my chickens on the down low, so I don't want more than two chickens. That's why I'm only getting one...

How to introduce week old chick to year old one?

One of our two chickens died. The one still living, Little Miss Sunshine, is very depressed, and I need to get her a friend. A neighbor is getting chicks on Thursday, and I'm taking one from his group. After a few weeks in the brooder I was going to house the new chick in a run beside...

Chicken just burned feet on outdoor grill

Thanks very much! I bandaged her feet today. Hopefully I will find the bandages still on her feet when I return home!

Please explain how to bandage chickens' feet

Thank you very much for the link! My 9 year old daughter held Little Miss Sunshine while I bandaged her, following the directions. Sunshine was a model patient! Now we'll just see if the bandage is still on when I return home!

Please explain how to bandage chickens' feet

Should I gently wrap all the toes together in one bandage or do 3 separate bandages and one for the toe that sticks out in the back?

Please explain how to bandage chickens' feet

I posted a while ago about my hen whose feet were burned on the grill--believe me, my dumb mistake will not happen again! Anyway, I've soaked her feet in betadyne. But I'd like to put bacitracin ointment on her feet and bandage them to protect from infection. Could you please explain how to...

Chicken just burned feet on outdoor grill

Thanks for all the support! I've been betadyning and she now seems to be walking fine, albeit a little gingerly. There is some blistering of skin. How should I handle this? Just keep bathing in the solution and wait for the blistered skin to fall off? I don't want her feet to get infected...

Chicken just burned feet on outdoor grill

Thank you! I feel horrible and keep crying. Just such a stupid mistake on my part. I know when a chicken is stressed, some feed it scrambled egg. Is there a reason for this? If so, should I feed her one? Thanks!

Chicken just burned feet on outdoor grill

Horrible. Horrible. There seem to be no more injuries than her feet. They are very tender and she picks them up gingerly when she walks. Then she nestled down in the grass. I used a diluted betadine solution to soak her feet then put her in an enclosed safe area with clean pine shavings...

Numbers of hours for artificial light? Just need confirmation!

I'm getting a timer for my coop light. If the sun comes up here around 7 am, and "my girls" mosey on back to the coop to roost at 5 pm, should the timer be set for 2 hours? That way they receive 12 hours of light total? Or should it be on for more hours than that? I guess I'm asking how many...

10-week old EE roo free to good home in Maryland--I'll transport!

"Sweet Brownie" was sexed as a girl. Comb, tail, etc. indicate that she's a he! Our city allows chickens, but our neighborhood covenants don't. All my neighbors have given the ok for my having pullets, but not roos. I'm afraid as Brownie gets older he'll give us away with his rooing. Is...

What age recommended for wing clipping?

I have three 10 week old EEs who are allowed to pasture in our fenced-in backyard for 3-4 hours a day. I'm not sensing that they will take off over our 4 ft fence (the highest allowed by our neighborhood covenants), but if that looks like that might happen, I may clip a wing. At what age can...

How to deal with stinky poop smell if I use a chicken tractor?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll put a poop catcher under the roosts in the morning to catch the overnight poops. Anyone get especially smelly poop from Purina Start and Grow preventing coccidisis?
