Yes, she is alone & exactly the reason I want to get her a friend. We live in Central FL so we do a few days of cold weather. I don't know what breed she is, I'll try to attach a pic. What type of hen is not prone to broodiness?
It's good to know that Sugar will get back to her normal...
Maybe I'll just wait it out & hope she comes round. This can't go on forever, can it? I'm thinking of getting another hen to keep Sugar company now that I've gotten rid of the roo. But then, that's even more $$ invested in this venture. I'm pretty disenchanted.
Glad your girl is happy now...
She's not interested in food, water or much of anything lately but I do make sure she has a food & water. What do you mean "re-home"? Actually find a new home for her? Maybe I'll give her golf balls to sit on as we have no fertile eggs.
Ok, so I've removed the nesting material, blocked off upstairs so she can't get to the laying boxes & she's still in brood mood. I've been getting her out of the coop so she can "play" in the yard & she just wants to go right back in. She hasn't laid an egg in almost a week and I didn't leave...
Good luck w/keeping the bears away from your chickens. I hope the hot wire does the trick. Looking forward to you posting the pic of the bear hanging on the side.
I live in rural St. Cloud where livestock is allowed. It is my personal choice to not have a rooster; I don't like the attitude of a rooster. Am willing to travel to Orlando or Melbourne for trade.
I have a buff silkie rooster that I'd be willing to trade for a hen. He has been crowing for less than a month. Please let me know if anyone has any interest. Someone told me our Animal Control would take him.
We move our two chickens every few days/once a week to a new patch of grass in the backyard; I love the portable coop. I bought a container from Goodwill ($.75) to make the bath, I wish I had the lid that went w/it. With all the rain we've had lately I've not been able to get any dry dirt...
I certainly appreciate all the wonderful advise I've received and have taken it all into consideration to help me make my decision. I've decided to put a combined dish of grit & oyster shell off to the side. Thanks, ya'll!
The perfect answer to my question! Thank you ever so much. I wish I had read this before I went & bought grit...I could have saved a few bucks and used some of the dirt road. I'll know better next time. Thanks again.
I was given a little black hen & her chick yesterday who IMMEDIATELY took over the coop & run. My other two hens are a nervous wreck & are huddled up in a corner so they don't get beat up. I'm not sure if I should give them time to adjust to each other or if I should get rid of one/both of the...
Thanks Marianne, your reply has led to even more questions. What ratio of grit and or oyster shells do I add to the feed? I've been crushing up the eggshells to put on my plants for a while now, guess I'll start splitting them w/the hens. I've been told if I do the eggshell thing there is no...
We have a chicken tractor for 4 hens that we move around in the back yard. Is it a problem that my hens are on grass? Now I'm worried about them not getting enough sand/grit naturally. How often should I add grit/oyster shells? Should I add a box of sand (I live in FL, we don't have dirt)...
