I have 1 Silkie rooster & 9 hens of various breeds & cross breeds. My rooster (Captain Von Trapp aka The Captain) has his 2 fave hens, the three of them hang out in a wee trio during the day, he shows very little interest in the other hens bar the occasional mating. He's a chicken of leisure.

Just checked in on mama & she's got 12 chicks!!! I've just doubled the size of my flock overnight! She had 14 eggs but I was dubious that that many would hatch, last time one of my chooks hatched chicks she had 10 eggs but we only got 3 chicks.
They are sooo adorable
I inadvertently joined the Christmas hatch Found my "missing" Astrolorp x sitting on a clutch in the vege garden last week. Moved her into a hutch as there was meant to be a storm, went to candle the eggs tonight to get an idea of what was going on & she's got 8 adorable wee chicks 4 wee...
I've just been offered this gorgeous 5 1/2 month old golden Bantam. I reeeeeeeally want to take it but I really only can if it's a hen as I have a Silkie roo & I don't think he'd be overly impressed by the addition of another roo. My birds free range so I wouldn't really have many options for...
I gave her another epsom salts bath on Thurs and fed her some natural yoghurt. Her underside no longer seems hard. She seems happy enough, her bottom appears to be less mucky but there's still small amounts of runny-ish poop or something collecting around her vent. She walks around with her tail...
So this morning I've taken her out of her cage, her bottom is a bit bald like she's moulting and has obviously been weeping a little overnight as there is a little dried up crud on there but it's stopped now. She's been to the toilet a few times in her cage, small amounts. I gave her a scrambled...
It's night time here at the moment so I don't want to wake her to give her abdomen another feel / massage but I will in the morning.
Her tail is pointing down, she appears to have been to the toilet and just a normal amount, she still appears to be straining - like twitching or pulses of her...
Just had a feel about inside her vent, no sign of an egg in there (as far as my finger would go) but her bottom has started weeping slightly, a kind of clear mucous colour. Any ideas as to what my next move should be?
Thanks for the replies.
I was thinking calcium because I did a few searches on here and a few members recommend calcium to get those muscles working to help push out the egg. I think I might very gently have a feel around to see if I can actually feel an egg, all I can feel from massaging her on...
Yesterday I was given 2 red shavers. The lady who had them said they had gotten in to her garden about 1 year ago, eaten her rhubarb and gone off the lay. She had consulted a vet who told her they would never lay again. I took them off her hands as pets for my boy as they have been raised from...
