    Caught in the Act

Quote: Unless I misunderstood the original post, it doesn't sound like the dog even ate the chickens, just killed them.

    I'm so heartbroken </3

I'm so sorry, this recently happened to me too (even the same dog breed) so I know exactly how you feel. They will be back, too. Do you have a plan?

Anything Wrong With Opossums in My Yard?

My woodland varmints must be either well-fed or a bunch of quitters, because I only had a few half-hearted attempts at break-ins until the foxes, coons, and possums gave up and basically ignored the coop altogether. But I wouldn't consider bars to be secure against very many predators...

Anything Wrong With Opossums in My Yard?

I told myself that if I caught a possum or coon in my trap, I'd kill it, and if I caught a fox or cat I'd let it go. First night caught a coon, second night a possum. Had no problem getting rid of the coon but I felt sorry for the possum, he wasn't aggressive in the least and just wanted to be...

Tips on getting Game Wardens on the ball?

A golden retriever isn't going to be any help, I'm afraid. An Aussie has a lot more courage but is no match for large, bold coyotes, especially if they are working together. I see Anatolians and other LGDs occasionally but didn't pay much attention to prices as I was only casually reading the...

Tips on getting Game Wardens on the ball?

If nothing else, I would be surprised if you didn't get people offering to let you temporarily keep your horses at their place until you can get the coyotes eliminated. I have found that horse people are really great about helping each other out, and often expecting nothing in return. Good luck.

Tips on getting Game Wardens on the ball?

I don't know how it is there, but around here the DNR isn't much help for people whose livestock are being attacked. They will generally deny there is a problem (or that the species even exists in that area), or blame it on stray dogs, leaving the owner to take care of it themselves. I hope you...

Rats eatting flesh off birds.... options for stoping this?

I don't have anything useful to add, but if you want some entertaining reading or unconventional ideas... rat-hunter.com I especially enjoyed "Ray uses Propane to blow up 2 acres of rats!" although I don't recommend you try that at home. Also, you'll notice that many of these stories involve...

    Lices again.

Quote: Pine shavings are wood byproducts from sawmills. Go to your local feed store and get the kind sold as horse bedding, it's a lot cheaper than the stuff from the pet store. Around here you can get a 40-50 lb bag of compressed shavings for $5 that goes a long way.

Tips on getting Game Wardens on the ball?

Oh, and if you post it in Farm & Garden instead of Services or Wanted (which nobody reads, at least around here anyway), I think you might find that horse owners can be a very helpful bunch. This is a busy time of year for CL, too, with people both selling and stocking up on firewood and hay...

Tips on getting Game Wardens on the ball?

Quote: Just ask them some general, open-ended questions about their hunting experience (particularly with coyotes) and let them know your concerns about having the houses and livestock so close - you should be able to get a good sense of how long they've hunted and how trigger happy they are...

Tips on getting Game Wardens on the ball?

I second the Craigslist ad - I have found it a great way to find people that are more than willing to help out. It's instant, free, and if you include the details from your original post, I'm sure people would offer to help. You can screen the people that respond to make sure they are...

    Trapping dogs - UPDATE

Well, this is NOT the animal I was hoping to find when I checked the trap... I guess I'll just consider it a bonus though. With the submissive behavior it showed at first, I almost felt bad enough to let it go (since all my chickens are gone now anyway), but luckily it eventually growled and...

    Trapping dogs - UPDATE

Quote: I thought about that too. I was also planning on having someone come out with a skidsteer to raise the ground level in that spot, and also spread more gravel under the gate. One day it almost looked like it dug some gravel out to get under. But now I want to catch it! The worst part...
