I've never known anyone to practice unsanitary chicken practices (I have seen dog owners doing unfavorable things with their dog's waste though). This is a good reminder for those who are not as responsible. It is sad that a few bag eggs (pun intended) can make 99.9% of chicken owners look bad.
A.T. is right, this argument has been going on for some time.
Personally I do wash my eggs in warm/hot running water rubbing gently with my (clean) hands and dry before putting in the fridge.
As for how long they last, we eat the eggs fairly soon (within 2 weeks) and have never had a problem...
