    Heater or heat panel -10

Likewise, mine are guinea. They don't have breed specifications, just by color. But they range anywhere from 5 lbs to 2lbs. The big guys are less affected by the weather/temp and even refuse to come in sometimes. But my daintier gals look positively miserable when it's super cold, refusing to...

    Heater or heat panel -10

Note that the experiment was using Hyline browns, avg size 4.4 lbs and hardy, although I did read they don't do well with rain. In contrast, chickens with lighter weights, or less feathering are noted to struggle more with cold weather, and those with larger combs tend to lose body heat faster.

Thats not bugs OR snow 🤧

When I remember to, I have disposable masks to wear while working out there. It's either that, or a sinus wash..or hold my breath. Our runs sound similar, & dust is part of the joy of having birds. Now, I have guinea, not chickens. But I'd be concerned about a tarp creating a slick surface...

    Heater or heat panel -10

I have 2 cozy coop panels hanging in the coop. They've knocked them off a few times when I didn't have the screw set in it's hanging holes properly. From that, I can tell you they will automatically shut off in they fall. It's radiant heat, which heats objects rather than the air. They're...

    Trying to determine male/female guineas

    Trying to determine male/female guineas

But they do kinda "waddle." 😉 it seems like males. You & I had had this conversation years ago. No longer convinced they mimic me (or subsequent broods just aren't as clever as the 1st😆). But, I still hear my boys trill or whistle in a way the girls don't do. Not saying the hens CAN'T...

Comment by 'Sydney65' in article 'Insulating The Chicken Coop for Winter'

I have guineas. Even the ag store ppl comment on how spoiled they are, but the learning curve of the early years was full of painful lessons and losses. As a result, yes, by non-bird owner standards, they are "spoiled." I know sub-human types exist who don't provide for their dogs' & cats'...

    Coop Temperature confusion

Thanks..they're stubborn but resilient birds. That was supposed to say "hemp", not "help". Lol. I try to use solar as much as possible, but the electric water heaters & radiants do well. Good luck!

    Coop Temperature confusion

Re Millie - I have a hen who has no feet, from frostbite. She gets around on the ground fine but unable to perch. I use help on the coop floor, and she has her own corner made up under the drop board. As others have suggested, I use radiant heat plates when the temp really drops that 1 or 2...

    Coop Temperature confusion

Late for the party, but we have 2 windows that remain slightly open and 2 solar exhaust fans with back up batteries that recharge every day. They aren't fool proof, I mean, if it storms & overcast for days on end, they stop, but they're remarkably good at finding some sun even on cloudy days...

    Ruptured yolk?

Back from the vet - I stand corrected, she weighs 2.4#. Shocking, bc she really is petite. No egg, no infection, peritonitis, etc. She DOES have an eye injury (scratch on rim of 3rd eye-lid) that's infected. I noticed it while she was sitting on my lap, but didn't think that would cause her...
