No takers? I have arranged to take him back to the lady we got him from, but if someone else wanted him for their flock, I would rather know he is going to a good home. The lady we got him from said she would try to find him a home, but no guarantees.
Well, the inevitable happened and someone complained about him. We got a notice today that we have to find a new home for him. We are sad, but I think we new it was probably coming at some point. :(
Hi,
Like so many other chicken fanciers, we bought 4 sexed pullets in february and unfortunately one of them turned out to be a roo. He has been handled since day one and is pretty nice. He is a little skittish, but has not shown any aggression towards us. Is a little hard to catch, but once...
Well, he started crowing a couple days ago. So far not excessive, and not super loud, but I guess we will have to see how that progresses! He is starting to act like a rooster...chasing the girls around and struting his stuff. Lol. It is pretty funny to watch him. He is very interested in the...
So after almost 4 months of bouncing back and forth between pullet or rooster, I can no longer deny the truth...it is most definately a rooster. I'm not sure how I feel about this. We are not supposed to have roosters in the city, but we have grown attached to the little guy. Thus far he has not...
I am now thinking that it is a pullet. There has been no more crowing, and the pushy attitude has decreased greatly since we have now intergrated them in with the big girls. The comb is still much redder that the other chicks, but really has not grown much more. I will try to post some more pics...
They are indeed from cackle hatchery! I have not heard anymore attempts to crow, but they are outside now, and I don't hear them nearly as much as when they were in the garage. I have noticed that since they went outside, the chest bumping, rooster like behaviors have seemed to decrease. They...
I also have a cat who is a very skilled hunter of birds (he once caught a starling, brought it in through the doggie door, and let it loose in my bedroom at 6 in the morning!). He frequently catches the wild pigeons that live in our neighborhood. But he does not bother the chickens at all! He is...
There is ventilation at the top on both sides (you can't see it very well) between the roof and the top of the walls. This will be covered with hardware cloth to prevent any critters from getting in. We are also considering putting in a couple little windows, just not sure how to make that work...
We found this shipping crate for free on craigslist, and decided to turn it into a coop! It is approximately 74"x30" and 48" tall...not huge, but enough for a few chickens.
Here is what we are starting with
We put in a shelf with a roost (complete with linoleum, and a backslpash for easy...
Here are some pics of the chick in question and also of the other chicks we currently have for comparison. These were taken yesterday. They are around 8 weeks old now...I think...I've kind of lost track of time!

Just wanted to post a quick update on the chick...I am almost 100% positive the chick with the short wing feathers and bold personality is a rooster! They are almost 8 weeks old now, and his comb is twice as big as the others and much redder. He continues to be bold and I have heard the most...
So I am still nursing this chicken along. She has days where she perks up a little and days where she does noting but sit with her head upside down all day long. If I syringe food and water onto her beak, she will eat it, but she is not eating at all on her own. I am tube feeding her once a day...
so it has now been two weeks since she first same up with wry neck. I brought her in the house and started her on poly-vi-sol and force feeding her three times a day as she was unable to eat much on her own. after about a week she perked up when taken outside, and started to eat a mash of...
