Louise died early this morning under my deck. My concern now is if she could have been contagious. Thank you for any thoughts. Karen

HELP! Chicken in trouble - drooling, lethargic

I realize I'm dredging up an old topic, but my Ameraucana hen that is about 1 year old I found this morning drooling, lethargic and barely able to keep her eyes open. No visible wounds, cannot feel an impacted crop (I lost another to that about 8 months ago). The only time I could see her moving...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

I've found the easiest hens for this area, and hardiest and good egg producers to be the Rhode Island Reds. I don't know too much about Opingtons. If you look over the various breeds in the listings on backyardchickens.com, you can read about and decide for yourself. I haven't seen a lot of...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Welcome! I am just around the corner from you in Tampa! I just went to Holloway's Feed Store in Land O Lakes on 41. They have baby RIRs and Americaunas (sp), and will be getting some Jersey Giants (I'm partial to these breeds as that's what I have). Great place to get hens, as well as...

    introducing Chicks to Flock

Thank you! So, maybe put the small coop in the big 10' x 10' coop at night for a while? I've never felt so stupid in my life!

Topic of the Week - Feeding table scraps to your flock

I agree with your healthy feeding habits! I am also so sorry for your loss. I lost a baby Jersey Giant that was only 2 weeks old to a stray cat. I THOUGHT she was safe, but sadly, she wasn't as protected in her outside habitat as I thought (which is why my 2 7-week old JGs now sleep in a...

Topic of the Week - Feeding table scraps to your flock

I have started feeding my girls some plain all natural yogurt with bananas and blueberries mixed in it (fresh fruits). They LOVE it and love to throw the berries in the air, chase and finally eat them. Odd 'ducks'.
