broke leg, now she's having trouble standin on other leg

I had 2 pullets die with something like a wierd paralysis. One leg straight in front, the other straight back. I tried antibiotics of various classes to no avail. I hope you don't have this, but if you do... I couldn't fix it. One quietly died after lots of care, and I had to kill the...

    Compound leg fracture healed!

Good news for owners of chickens with compound fractures of the leg! I was on a ride-along with my horse vet yesterday. We stopped by a house to do horse work.. and met the owners of a rooster who had broken his leg a couple of weeks ago. They had gently cleaned the skin of the leg, and...

    Weak legged hen

People may say that the meat birds are prone to this due to weight.. But I had 2 that died with this problem. I gave 5 different classes of antibiotic (yes, a fortune) over a 4 month period for coccidiosis issues. I don't know if it stemmed from the respiratory problem leaving them prone to...

Is olive oil irritating to chicken skin?

I have a young hen with itchy face and ears. It's interesting about the possiblilties. But since she is flakey and itchy there I first used a Sevin type of dust. Then a little mineral oil. Today it is less scaley, and I found extra peanut oil and used that instead. I cannot see olive oil...

question prolapsed vent or anus blood everywhere

Do you remember in All Creatures Great and Small... James Herriot pushed a cow's uterus back in and held it inside with a wine bottle filled with warm water. Is it possible to push it back with a warm round smallish stone? Would it stay for a while or have the attaching ligaments torn. I...

    Hens with foot problems

Over the past week or two I have posted lots of questions on bumblefoot and others have questions also. Also, look for weakness in walking etc. Everyone seems to be getting whatever this is. I have lost a hen 2 weeks ago to weakness starting with limping then couldn't walk at all. Then...

    Frizzles dying - need advice.

Heavens, the "hollowed out" part sounds like aliens were there. Other thoughts rats?? I know when my hen prolapsed, her friends helped pull out more of her intestines and I found a 12 inch long piece of her insides in the coop. I have no other ideas. Somewhere I read a sticky or post...

Cornish Cross 4 weeks can't stand, watery poo, not eating...

I got mine from my horse vet. You might try calling a regular vet, but they will want to see the little sick one, and there goes the $$$. I know some of the horse catalogs sell it.. but darn it I think you need a prescription! A horse vet may me more willing to sell you a syringe 3cc full...

    GASPING for breath?

I tried antibiotics.. duramycin is cheap and avail at the feed store(I don't recall the dose, it's here in "search". I added to the water, and food (from the water).. and if they have a bad disease (Coryza) then go with Sulmet (which I could get from another store, but other posters prefer...

question prolapsed vent or anus blood everywhere

My last prolapsed vent was assisted into bloodyness by her friends pecking at it. So, even if you get it back inside with prep H and sugar, it could be a very open internal wound. Yes, try antibiotic, so at least the "bugs" are kept at bay.

Chick barely alive! Pecked to near death! Help!!!

I'll pipe in before the experts get to your post. Separate (obviously, sorry). Keep snuggy warm, temp with tasty food... egg, fruit, anything to stimulate the chick to live. Perhaps attention from you as she sits in your hand.... talk to her etc. so she doesn't feel alone in the...

Cornish Cross 4 weeks can't stand, watery poo, not eating...

I have no GOOD suggestions. But I have had (2) 5 month old pullets who had begun to walk with a limp, then within a couple of days couldn't walk at all.. they had to flop around with their wings doing the work. I tried terramycin, tylan 50, Sulmet (supposed to kill coryza and friends) ...
