Thanks for the advice everyone! Since I want to cover such a big area, the more I think about it, it will be a lot of work to install so many grommets. I have a lot of scrap wood laying around that we use to burn in our wood stove. So I'm thinking about either using wire ties or zip ties to...
The roofing on my big run is chain link as well. I had it partially covered with tarps last year, it held up just fine. I cleared off the snow after each storm. And yes, those are similar to the grommets I was looking at..I was thinking maybe metal ones? They might last longer...
I would like to keep out both wind and snow. We get a good amount of snow every winter and the chickens don't like stepping in just a dusting of it and they sure do not like the wind. It is bone chilling!
I've decided to use plastic to wrap around my runs for the winter this year. Last couple of years I've used tarps but they look unsightly and they're not waterproof. I bought 12'x100' 6mil plastic. My question is how do I attach it to my chain link run?! I was thinking about using grommets, so...
I have a chick that's almost a week old that's walking on her hocks. I did some research and I think it's a riboflavin defecentcy. My problem is that tomorrow is easter and all the farm stores will be closed. Will she be ok till Monday? Should I go to the drug store in the mean time and get...
I just got my new incubator and I'm not sure what I should set the settings at. I want to do my best on my first hatch! I know the temp should be at 99.5F but what should the humidity be at, the turning angle, the turning interval? What does everyone set theirs at?
@WNCcluck I have 12. 6 goes in one coop and 6 in the other and they share a run. I only have one with bare spots. Her chest, under her belly, to her bum is all bare.
I'm from MA too and was wondering the same thing! I have a late molter who's got bare spots. I was leaning towards bringing her into my basement for the coldest night. I really don't want to put a heat lamp in my coop.
I have a hen that my rooster injured. I set up a chicken hospital in the basement and she was in there for about 2 weeks. Now she is fully healed so I brought her back out to the coop. Now she won't leave. She sits on the roost most of the time and occasionally in the nesting box. She hasn't...
Depends on where you live and what kind of winters you usually experience. In my experience tarps haven't done me much good. I wrapped my run with several and snow still made its way in. But I do live in an area where our winters can be pretty harsh.
