    Help! Feather Pulling

I went away last week and when I came home 3/4 of my birds had their feathers pulled. I left them with a clean coop plenty of food and water ect. The coop is designed for the number of birds I have, and they always have access to a 40 square ft. run. I'm planning on putting more perches in the...

Where should I buy chicks for 4H?

I have four standard chickens too, and they beat the tar out of my EE. Do you think silkies would be to easy to bully with their size and crests? I want them to be happy, and keep their feathers since I need them for show. I was also thinking standard cochins. Could they hold their own?

Where should I buy chicks for 4H?

I'm doing the 4h show project for chickens, and I'm looking to get a few chicks. There is a breeder nearby, but she only sells silkies and even though I would love one I'm worried I'll have a hard time selling them if I need to. :/ Any sugestions for finding a few SQ chicks?

    Welp Hatchery

This was probably was a while ago, but how did your d'uccles turn out? Were they well tempered and healthy? Do they conform to the breed standards? My local Jax has chicks from Welps, and I want to try their goldneck d'uccles. Thanks!

    Welp's hatchery for 4h?

I recently joined 4h, and I'm going to be needing a new bird for the show project. They gave us a master list of all of the chick shipments this year for our local Jax. They're buying from Welp's and I wanted to ask: Does anyone have any success/failure stories when using Welp's chicks for a...

    Bloody Beaks

There is chicken wire around their run, but it is too big to cause injury.

    Bloody Beaks

The feeder is a long chick feeder. I havent noticed any problems but maybe it's too small now. The chick are much bigger now but the feeder looks like this.

    Bloody Beaks

This morning I found crusted blood where the beak meets the comb on all four of my 6 week old chickens. I suspect that they might be picking on each other. I'm unsure though because all four have the injury, and the most severe is on my dominant pullet, an easter egger named fennel. If they are...

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

While all my losses have been to foxes, I have heard gruesome stories of what racoons like to do with the chickens they get their hands on. My aunt's salmon faverolles were mauled by them, and though her two show chickens survived she was unable to show them anymore. At least the fox gave my...

    Gravel in the chicken coop

I just finished my chicken coop and chicken run, and my mother is insisting that I use gravel as the floor/ground material. Is that a good idea? Will my chickens eat the gravel? Is there a better alternative I can pitch to her?
