7:20am EST...and it’s -13°F with windchill at -20°. Not much wind today, so far. Overnight average wind was only 3mph, highest gust was 7. Hope today passes without too much wind. We’re warming up to 48° in a couple days — wow. Good... I can get out and do some work without my toes...
Just got an emergency text notification from the power company to reduce heater thermostat down to 65 through Friday. We burn wood, so we can’t help there. Everyone’s heaters running constantly must be putting a real strain on the grid. I hope anyone incubating birds has a backup just in case...
A ha! So, I suppose this is why we didn’t get mail today. I figured it was something like this, but didn’t bother to check. I guess I’ll head over to usps’ website & have a look.
It’s 9:40p EST, Wed night. I’m in SE Michigan. Woke up to -8°F with windchill at -27°. Was a gorgeous, sunny day & got up to 2°. Right now, we’re back down to -15° With a windchill of -26°. Thankfully, the chickens seemed absolutely fine today with the precautions I’ve taken. All are...
I have a PacMan frog that eats frozen small mice. And I’ve fed small mice to him that my cat occasionally catches. If they’re too big for the frog, I give them to the chickens, but only if they’re still alive. Chickens will ignore it if it’s not moving...in my experience. Perhaps others have...
We’re at 10°F right now, which is the high for the day.:( We’re heading dooown....to -9°F real temp, with 18-20mph winds, gusting higher. My weather app has been about 10° off (too high) nearly every day the low temps are extreme, for the last couple weeks. I’m thinking it’ll be off again &...
How are your birds doing? We’re getting - 20° tomorrow with windchill at -45°. I’m worried a bit about my chickens, but they’re out of the wind/breeze/drafts, so I’m thinking they’ll be ok.
Love finding this thread — logging in after a good year or so away from BYC. (Came to look to see if anyone else is panicked a little about the crazy low temps this week...lol!) I’ve been looking into raising meat rabbits & quail lately. Not sure if we’ll do it yet, but it’s definitely up for...
Just my story for whatever it’s worth. This is my second year with a flock in SE Michigan. We just hit -11*F this morning, & have a good week to go of these sub-zero temps. The choices we made:
Lights...we have them on because we sell eggs & want to keep our customer base in eggs through the...
Sorry to hear this. I had a bird die from similar symptoms once. Definitely not infectious coryza (IC), as my bird didn't have that putrid smell. Thankfully, she was an isolated case & it didn't spread, whatever it was... I quarantined her & tube fed her food with some rooster booster (rb)...
In SE Michigan. Last night, got down to 17*F, high of 32*F today & already cooling off. At 31*F now. Rest of week will be 50's during the day ...& lots of rain.
