I started with 6 hens & 1 Rooster (Rhode Island Reds) 4 yrs ago not knowing very much about chickens except what I had read on line or magazines!! Being an animal lover, soft & tender hearted, & yes motherly female , they soon became like spoiled babies!!! They each had names according to traits, personality so off and running I went with my love for chickens!! As my love & flock grew so did my demands for them!! This is where I got in trouble & still am in trouble!! Do u know how hard it is to find people to help you build quality coops and fences with you at your place without charging u ur entire life savings or ur entire income when u on social security like me??? Luckily I did have a friend that could help until his own family needs required just about all of his time so now it is me again that knows how to build nothing !! When u live with no one to help you built things and u don't know urself....this is a Hugh hurdle to cross!! U either gotta Find a friend, rob a bank, win the lottery, hope the rich person in the family remembers you in the will, get married or get a boyfriend to help you, suddenly become a carpenter yourself and guess what happens ??? You have to learn lots of skills you never , ever thought u would!! I am telling you this so u know before hand , chickens have to have watering stations that are cleans, clean areas to roost so not to be attracting flies and other creatures, you need laying boxes, u must be well read and none of this stuff from the older generation well we use to do....well guess what folks? This is a different age , time and generation and you dealing with a lot more diseases, problems of predators bc people have cut all the woods down , bacteria and viruses have changed strands thru the yrs and the list continues!! Would I give my girls up even with the work they are??
Not on your life!! They are my pets, I love them like some do their dogs or cats and now have approx 60 chickens of different breeds and hatching eggs in incubator to sell of guineas and Bantam Silver Seabrights!!
Love my job of the chickens!!
Do I get the return of what is in them as a whole?? Probably not but the joy of them is 100 times greater than any money can buy and that is priceless !! Once a chicken is brought here, it stays till it dies!! It is home for good !!! This is my chicken life and how I started and no plans to quit any time soon!! Who needs a comedy club, go to the chicken coop & take a seat & observe & I promise u will laugh, enjoy urself and feel better!!!
