I rescued a Chicken about 2 years ago. We have not been able to identify her breed but she was rescued from a Philpino family in Central Victoria. She is alway broody. So she has hatched several eggs. She was an nicey tawney brown but after hatching this last lost her feathers are growing back...
I bought some eggs for my one and only broodie chook (yes I mean I only had one chook) to sit on, its now 21 days in and we have had a heatwave of an average of 40 deg C. Julie Chook is doing fine and she is a good mummy but has it been too hot for the chickens to survive?
Thanks to this site, I figured out that the crows were stealing the eggs.
I had thought for about 9 weeks that my 4 old, thoroughly spoilt, rescued battery hens had come to the end of their lay. Not that that is a problem, we love them anyway.
But then I saw a Crow in "Fowlcatraz" and realized...
Oh yes! Chicken Drama for sure.
Betty's leg is better and she can now run away from May again so they are all getting treated the same and seem to be getting on well.
Cheers, from Ted
Update on my Girls School.
May is still chasing Betty, but Lucy breaks it up where she can. They have all slept together every night and I am getting 3 eggs every day.
But poor Betty got up today with a sore leg and is limping so I isolated her as I thought that if May chases her she can't...
My girls just got a load of worm castings - my worm farm was so full I couldn't fit anymore scraps in it. I am in Australia we call sweets lollies - so we are now calling castings Worm Lollies
Thank you for your reply.
I know one on their own is difficult and I would have more if I could, but renting and our lease only allows us to have 3. So I have to try and get them to get along.
8 hours on and they are all in the garden. I have had the new one in the large coop until now and I...
Hi,
I introduced myself and my girls about 4 months ago.
I rescued 3 battery hens and we now call our back yard our Chook Old Peoples Home.
Anyway one died last week due to being egg bound (thank you for everyone who has written posts about Egg Binding - I learned so much from all your...
We are back!
The cat and the chooks met us at their doors.
I did tell our neighbour to check for eggs but not sure if she did as we have 6. The lala girls made me check for slugs and the cat has done to bed on dads knee.
Oh and Scout Bear says find him on FB
I adopted 3 battery hens about 2 months ago.
They are slowly getting to trust me. From not knowing what soil is to digging up my garden. From running away from me to pecking my feet to liking a cuddle.
If a chook can learn to trust humans these girls have.
but my husband and I had booked...
I have only bought eggs for over the past 10 years if I have known the owners and their chooks and know that the chooks are loved and looked after.
Here in Victoria Australia - I have paid up to $6 a dozen.
3 months ago - a long time dream came true.
Now I have 3 chooks of my own, Rescue...
Thanks Overrun,
My chooks are very curious! However they are just getting used to being picked up and being cuddled. I think in their past life being picked up was not for very nice reasons.
The most funny event this week was when they discovered slugs. It was like watching a footy match...
Thanks everyone for your welcomes!
I am also in Down Under.
My husband thinks I have gone mad. He thought I would end up the crazy cat lady but now he thinks I am the weird bird woman.
When we moved here I was scared of magpies and someone told me if I feed them they wont swoop me. So I...
Just put the baby girls to bed.
They have dug up my vegi patch, destroyed my garden. They think the local pub is the fish pond and now even my cat thinks they are gorgeous.
I thought I was a cat slave, I think I have become a Chook slave too
Love from Ted
