    Sick Hen

My hen is very sick. She's had very runny brown diareah, lethargic, not eating or drinking. I found her this way this morn. I gave her a warm bath to clean her up and checked her vent. It looks very swollen and open. Checked for an egg...didn't feel one. After the bath, there were 2...

@scratchandpeck Penny's tummy swelled fast and is hard. Her swelling hasn't gone down at all. She has list a lot of weight and eats like a horse !

Was your girl able to walk? Mine can only wobble. I wasn't aware that their swelling would never go down. Wow, what a bummer!

How's little Turkey doing? That Vet just knew she had it because of her tummy. She knew chickens really well.

    Egg bound

Did her swelling subside? Was she able to lay again? Or did you have to segregate her until she passed?

She's still hanging in there! The vet said she had the egg yolk peritonitis. She said since she is eating and drinking she had a 50/50 chance of making it. She gave us baytril. Real nice vet and only charged me $ 27.00. I sure hope she makes it. Is your girls stomach swollen like Pennys?

Feeding syringe...Soften some pellets mixed with water. Have someone hold her in a towel and just open her beak and slowly push the contents down her throat. Give her time to swallow. You might also want to get some liquid chick vitamins. That has a baby dropper. But like that other gal...

I'm sorry. You said she wasn't eating much...You need to force feed her and make sure she stays hydrated.

    Egg bound

From what the other gals on here stated with their egg bound hens is that they would have the egg within a couple of hours after giving them calcium. I guess it couldn't hurt...Is she eating and drinking?

    Egg bound

I did the same thing and could have sworn there was an egg there and tried to work it out but nothing came out. Is her tummy swollen? Is she eating?

Her regular food is an organic layer and then the pellets are a supplement called Manna I think. I see you have a Blue Heeler...I do too. He's the best dog I have ever had! Where are you in Alabama? I'm in TN.
