Are There Any Processors in Colorado?

Quote: I've talked with a couple of people who have used them, I just need to remember who I talked to and call them. I'll see what I can dig up in the next day or two. Much appreciated. Thank you!

I'd love some input regarding my flock!

Thanks, y'all. Another question I forgot to ask the first time around - how many hens does each rooster 'need' to be happy? Is there a number, or does it depend on the roo? Thanks again.

Are There Any Processors in Colorado?

Quote: There's one out near Calhan? Do you have any more info? I've been trying to find one local to me (I'm in Falcon) to no avail, so I just do my own. Thanks in advance!

I'd love some input regarding my flock!

Hello All, I wanted to get some input and see what y'all might suggest regarding my flock. I have been buying cornish-rock crosses, and decided to try raising our own. I got some white laced red cornish roos and some white plymouth rock hens. This morning, one of the white rock hens...

Best ideas for a DIY scalder?

I use my water bath canner. It works well for me. Outside, I can put it on a hotplate and plug it in (add hot water from the house first) since I don't have a small propane burner.

    Scrambled eggs for chicks?

Quote: There is a possibility that the flavors of spices can get into the eggs they lay - you might not want to give them garlic, or someone may end up with a lightly garlicky cake or something.

    I'm so stoked!

I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one here trying to raise meat birds! I got a call from the hatchery a couple days ago and my birds are backordered. Due to a family reunion that would mess up, well, everything, I am going to have to wait until June. That's actually okay - they still hatch them...

10x10 area how many bales of shavings to start?

I think it comes in cubic feet, so you can probably figure the depth you want and just do the math. If you get more than you need, you'll probably be adding some every so often anyway, yes? If you are raising meat birds, they will mess it a lot more than other birds would, so you may want to...

    Square ft. chicken tractor question.

Thanks for the replies. Ultimately, I want to be down to 2 roosters anyway, with about 6 hens apiece. So maybe I'll narrow my choices sooner rather than later. Also, my pullets got backordered, so I can up the quantity on the white rocks if I want to. I wasn't sure if the square footages...

    Square ft. chicken tractor question.

Hello, All, I'm planning to set up multiple small 'flock-lets' of chickens, each having 4 hens and a rooster. For just five birds, how much outdoor and indoor square footage do you think I'd need? The hens will be white rocks and the roos are white laced red cornish - so good sized birds once...

Hoop Coops*UPDATE!*It's finished! New Pics pg. 3

I am really liking this design, and I can see some ways I can do something similar here. Thanks so much for posting your photos along with your experiences!

    Treatz.

I have a lidded bowl on the counter (in the fridge if needed). Plate scrapings from meals go in there, and we take them to the chickens each morning. They get a little bit of everything, and they really like it. They also really like grasshoppers

Hold head on ground with stick/pull up on legs--OK method?

I've tried a lot of the 'snap and pull' techniques that I've seen in books, read about online, etc. In person, in the moment, I'm not always sure that I've done the job as quickly as I meant to. A few years ago, I was in Harbor Freight and got a big (about an 8" blade) and quite heavy meat...

    I'm so stoked!

Thanks, silkiechicken! I actually knew that, and sort of 'need' that here. We are at high altitude, and the really fast growing birds don't do as well here - I think the lack of oxygen in the air is too much strain on them. So I'm hoping that by having 'not quite as good' birds, they'll be...

    I'm so stoked!

Sounds like it will be a year of adventures for both of us! I'm nervous (a little) about the tractor because we have so many predators around here. It's going to need to be VERY strong and sturdy to keep them out. I do have a good run on the henhouse (we call it the chicken fortress) so I can...
