I know a coon can tear poultry wire, but we are only using it for the daytime run and I am not concerned about daytime predators because when the chickens are out of the coop we will be here. We don't have any predators roaming around in the daytime except the neighbors dogs.
The floor under...
It is just common sense. Dogs and birds don't play nice together. Both of my neighbors have dogs and cats so I am anticipating future problems and taking precautions.
This photo is not chicken wire. It is chain link fencing. My chicken wire has 1" mesh.
Isn't that sufficient? It is sold specifically for the purpose of keeping predators out
of the chicken house, correct?
I had 35 chickens at one point and when they were young they always returned to the coop. That is where they feel safe.
But when they got big enough to get up on a 6 ft fence they preferred to roost up on the fence poles at night, then I had to put them inside and shut the door.
Ed has been working in the rain and in the dark to get the coop ready for the girls. He has never built anything like this before so it has been a learning
experience and not without some aggravation.
Previously, whenever Ed saw a bird he shot it, but since he has been with me for one year he is...
I always get my chicks from a hatchery. My theory is that the hatchery controls the health and cleanliness of the birds better than an individual might because the hatchery has a business to protect and would soon go bankrupt if they started shipping sick or weird chickens to their customers. I...
You really need a bigger space for the chicks. You need to make sure they NEVER run out of water. So a larger amount. Move the light so the chicks aren't over heating. This is really all they need, Food, Water and correct temperature Good Luck Sweetie
From your photos I expect your birds are too hot. The light creates a lot of heat and the chicks can't get away from it because the box is too small and they are too crowed. Give the chicks more space and make sure they can move away from the light when they are hot and move toward it when they...
No, I would not try to make the chick stand or feed itself. It is literally almost dead already. You will need to hold it and keep it warm and hydrated.
I have to disagree with other posts here, I think your whole flock is sick. I have never experienced a whole flock of lethagic birds. Take at least one of them to a vet for a diagnosis. If you have an infected flock you may be able to medicate them and they may recover. However if you can not...
I have occasionally received chicks (or ducklings) barely alive and have revived them. You need to take the chick out of the brooder so the other chicks don't knock it around and hold it. It is so weak that it can not feed itself and is probably dehydrated. If you want to save the chick it will...
How do you feel about the Austra Whites? I considered getting them because I wanted a white chicken but I chose a Columbian Wyandotte instead. I had the Black Australorp before, which I liked a lot so I got some of those again.
